Fresno State freshman forward Orlando Robinson recorded his fourth double-double for the Bulldogs with 16 points and 12 rebounds against New Mexico on Tuesday night.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Fresno State men's basketball team delivered a competitive first half, but faltered in the second half in losing 78-64 to the New Mexico Lobos late Tuesday night at Dreamstyle Arena – The Pit.
Fresno State (5-11, 1-4 Mountain West) had a difficult time guarding UNM redshirt junior guard/forward Vance Jackson, a transfer from UCONN, who finished with a season-high 29 points and 13 rebounds for his second straight double-double for the Lobos.
New Mexico (14-3, 3-1 MW) remained undefeated at home at The Pit this season with relentless effort in the paint and on the perimeter, especially down the stretch.
Fresno State freshman forward Orlando Robinson scored 16 points with 12 rebounds for his fourth double-double, and freshman guard Jarred Hyder added 14 points for the Bulldogs.
Redshirt freshman Jordan Campbell made his Fresno State debut as a mid-season Division I transfer from Oregon State and posted eight points - all in the first half.
How it happened: After making five of its first six shots, Fresno State had jumped out to a 14-5 lead over UNM, and also led 22-14 before the Lobos answered with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 22-22.
With the score again tied and this time at 33-33, the Lobos scored eight straight points to take the lead for good at 41-33, but the Bulldogs closed to within 41-37 at the break.
After UNM scored the first six points of the second half, Fresno State made a pair of 3-pointers to pull back within four at 47-43, yet the 'Dogs got no closer.
Fresno State did outrebound UNM 44-34 overall for the game, with the difference being on the offensive glass, which saw the Bulldogs have a 17-7 advantage. However, Fresno State scored just 10 points on those 17 extra offensive possession and missed 17 of its 30 dunk or lay-up attempts.
UNM also had the upper-hand in transition offense with the Lobos outscoring the 'Dogs 20-11 in fast break points.
Quotes:
Justin Hutson, Fresno State head coach
On New Williams and Jarred Hyder getting in foul trouble in the first half…
"The two fouls, both of those guys getting two fouls guarding really good players and New is hobbled a little bit, hurt. You wanted to try to get out of the first half with them having only two since we were still in the game. You didn't want them to pick up three (with New Mexico being) an isolation team that would have went after both of them."
On Jordan Campbell's debut…
"I thought he did some good things early and I thought he faded late. It was one of his first college basketball games. He's a redshirt freshman, so I'm glad he had a chance to get out there and play, but wish he would have made a few more."
Next up: Fresno State will host No. 7 San Diego State on Jan. 14 at 8 p.m. PT at Save Mart Center. A special "Two for Tuesday" ticket promotion is available online only starting at $6 per ticket.
