Bulldogs suffer first round exit

Fresno State senior guard New Williams scored a team-high 21 points in the Bulldogs’ first round exit from the MW Men’s Basketball Championships in Las Vegas.
LAS VEGAS --- The eighth-seeded Fresno State men's basketball team lost 77-70 to the ninth-seeded Air Force Falcons in the first round of the 2020 Mountain West Men's Basketball Championships on Wednesday afternoon at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Fresno State (11-19) was led by senior guard New Williams, who finished with a team-high 21 points from New Williams in the Bulldogs' season-ending loss. Nate Grimes, Noah Blackwell and Niven Hart each had 13 points in the neutral site game.
Air Force (12-19) was fueled by AJ Walker's 24 points.
How it happened: Fresno State found itself down by 11 to Air Force midway through the first half, yet the Bulldogs worked their way back and trailed just 31-28 at halftime.
Fresno State eventually took the lead at 63-62 on a 3-pointer by Hart with 5:19 to play, but the Falcons made enough plays down the stretch to hold off the Bulldogs.
Air Force made 53.7 percent of its field goal attempts, including a 60 percent clip in the second half, while Fresno State shot 44.2 percent from the field.
The Bulldogs were outrebounded 29-27 and outscored 30-10 in the paint by the Falcons, who forced 15 Bulldog turnovers – eight via Air Force steals.
