Georgia Lawson and Tiffiny Wallace are Fresno State’s nominees for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, which will be named this fall.
INDIANAPOLIS – Fresno State seniors Georgia Lawson and Tiffiny Wallace have been nominated into a pool of a record 605 female college athletes for the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Rooted in Title IX, the NCAA Woman of the Year Award was established in 1991 to recognize graduating female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
The nominees represent all three NCAA divisions, including 259 nominees from Division I, 126 from Division II and 220 from Division III. Nominees competed in 24 sports, with multisport student-athletes accounting for 128 of the nominees.
Lawson is one of 28 nominees from the sport of women's tennis, while Wallace is one of 26 total lacrosse student-athletes – with those figures representing all three NCAA divisions.
Georgia Lawson, Women's Tennis
Georgia Lawson – a native of Nottingham, England – helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2018 Mountain West tournament championship and also competed in the 2018 NCAA Doubles Championship. She is a three-time All-MW Doubles Team honoree while almost exclusively playing at the No. 1 doubles position in each of her four seasons in the San Joaquin Valley.
During her career at Fresno State, Lawson has also been named a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, a MW Scholar-Athlete, Academic All-MW and an ITA Scholar-Athlete, and served on the department's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (2017-20). She earned her bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in Child & Family Services.
Tiffiny Wallace, Lacrosse
Tiffiny Wallace – a native of Sandy, Utah – is the program's all-time leading scorer with 118 career goals, along with owning the team's all-time record in assists and points. She is also a three-time All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honoree.
During her career at Fresno State, Wallace served as team captain (2019-20), a representative on Fresno State's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (2018-20) and a member of the Athletics Advisory Committee (2019-20). She was also a three-time All-MPSF All-Academic Team honoree and NCSC member, and earned her bachelor's degree in sport psychology.
Spotlight: NCAA Woman of the Year Nomination & Selection Process
Member schools are encouraged to honor their top graduating female college athletes each year by submitting their names for consideration for the Woman of the Year Award. Schools can recognize two nominees if at least one is a woman of color or international student-athlete.
Conference offices will select up to two nominees each from their pool of member school nominees. All nominees who compete in a sport not sponsored by their school's primary conference, as well as associate conference nominees and independent nominees, will be considered by a selection committee. Then, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.
From the Top 30, the Woman of the Year selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division and announce nine finalists. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then will choose the 2020 NCAA Woman of the Year, who will be named this fall.
