'Dogs oust Warriors in home opener
11/17/2021 11:24:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FRESNO, Calif. – Close early, Fresno State used a 33-point third quarter to defeat Stanislaus State 88-71 in Wednesday night's home opener at the Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs shot 55 percent in the period, going 4-of-6 from deep to outscore the Warriors by 17 out of the half.
Haley Cavinder posted her second doule-double of the season with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Hanna Cavinder had 21. Both juniors had a team-high four assists. Yanina Todorova added a season-high 16 points.
How It Happened
Following a slow start shooting in the opening quarter, eight straight points from the Cavinder twins to start the second, including back-to-back 3-pointers, helped the 'Dogs regain the lead. Leading by four at the break, Fresno State ratcheted up the defense holding the Warriors to just shy of 32 percent shooting in the third. The defense turned into offense as the Bulldogs used runs of 7-0 and 10-0 to begin to pull away.
In just under seven minutes removed from halftime, Fresno State built its lead up to 21. The Bulldogs saw out the remaining 13 minutes, not allowing the Warriors to get the game back into single digits.

On tonight's performance…
"I wish we would have had a better start than we did. The first quarter didn't really go the way we wanted it to. I didn't think we were really sharp and defending the way we usually do. Second quarter was better, I thought we obviously shot the three really well tonight. When you shoot the three better than you shoot from the field, that's not a bad thing. Transitioned good in the first half especially and then I thought out third quarter was real good. So that kind of set the tone and I think our kids weren't too happy with how it went the first half, so a little bit of fire came out that second half."
On Hanna's 1,000-point milestone…
"Haley and Hanna both meeting that mark so early in their career, that's a big deal. It's a big deal to have one, let alone two people, at the same time being able to do that. It really is just a reflection on how hard they work, how hard Hanna has worked. Hanna has really improved her game. She's been able to score in different ways and defensively when she's pressing and getting out in that transition, that really helps us. Really proud of them. Really glad to see them do that. It's funny because with almost two years left, at least the rest of this year and next year, they have a lot of time. It'll be dangerous I think to have two kids on the same team at the same time break as many records and do as well, it's kind of cool to see that."

On her 1,000-point milestone…
"It was super exciting just to be able to celebrate that with my team and my coaches. I think coming in that was one of my goals so being able to accomplish that here with Haley obviously was something super special to me."
