11/27/2021 6:27:00 PM | Women's Basketball
SAN DIEGO – Fresno State dropped its final game at The Dana on Mission Bay Holiday Tournament, being held to a season-low 46 points in a 63-46 defeat to Drexel on Saturday at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Known for a stifling defense, the Dragons held the Bulldogs to 29.4 percent shooting on the day.
How It Happened
Trailing 14-8 with 2:26 remaining in the opening period, the Bulldogs managed to cut the deficit to three by the end of the quarter. A 3-pointer by Hanna Cavinder from the corner out the break brought the 'Dogs level for the first time since the start of the contest. A 6-2 stretch for Drexel midway through the second put the Dragons up 26-20. Charisse Fairley quickly cut the deficit in half with a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Wytalla Motta then brought the 'Dogs within one with a pair at the line, but as they did throughout the half, the Dragons countered as Fresno State got close, scoring five points in the enusing 90 seconds to take a 31-25 lead. A driving layup from Motta in the final minute pulled the 'Dogs back to within four at the half.
During the third, Fresno State struggled to string together consecutive scoring possessions, allowing Drexel to use three 5-0 spurts during the period to help extend its lead out 17 late in the quarter. The Bulldogs pulled back to within 12 at the end of the period following a 3-pointer from Hanna as time expired. Imani Lacy hit a three of her own to start the fourth which brought the deficit into single digits but that was as close the 'Dogs would get the remainder of the day. Fresno State was held to 3-of-14 shooting in the final quarter.
Team Notes
Fresno State will continue its road stretch next week, heading up to the Bay Area to face Cal on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. PT.
