'Dogs wrap up UCLA Invitational

LOS ANGELES – The Fresno State softball team fell short in its doubleheader against LMU on the final day of the UCLA Tournament, Saturday afternoon. The Lions defeated the Bulldogs 4-2 in the first game and 2-0 in the second.
Three pitchers saw time in the circle for the Bulldogs. Junior Hailey Dolcini led the way for the bullpen with six strikeouts. Sophomore Adrianna Noriega logged two hits at the plate and chalked an RBI.
GAME 1
Dariana Orme entered the circle for the Bulldogs, marking her first start of the season. Orme and the Bulldogs' defense held the Lions scoreless through three innings. In the bottom of the fourth inning, LMU struck first with a three-run home run. Â
The Bulldogs responded in fifth, Kelsey Hall reached base on a fielding error and Noriega send her home with an RBI double. The Lions followed with a run of their own, making it 4-1 through five innings.
In sixth inning, Kelcey Carrasco went yard to left field for the first Bulldog home run of the 2021 season, cutting the Lions lead in half (4-2). Fresno State made the plays to hold LMU in the bottom of the inning, keeping the Bulldogs in the game.
Noriega logged her second hit of the day with a leadoff single through the left side. After Carrasco was hit by the pitch and Miranda Rohleder drew a walk, the bases were loaded with one out. The next batter hit a fly ball to left field, the 'Dogs tagged up but the runner was thrown out at third to end the game.

GAME 2
Dolcini took the circle to start the second game.
LMU came out with hot bats, hitting a leadoff double. The runner stole third and was able to go home on a throwing error for the first run of the game. Carrasco hit a two-out single to keep the bottom of the inning alive, but Fresno State was unable to respond with a run of its own after the next batter popped up to first base.
The Lions stayed on the attack, hitting a shot over the left field fence to take a 2-0 lead. LMU's defense held tough, sending the next six consecutive batters down. Kaitlyn Jennings fought to keep the Bulldogs in the game with a leadoff double to start the sixth inning, but the next three batter were sent down.
LMU would retire the final three batters in the seventh to secure its second win of the day.
