Hammer throwers claim top four spots to open Fresno State Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State opened its home schedule with a bang on Friday with its women's hammer crew snagging the top four spots in the opening event of the Fresno State Invitational. All four landed marks over 58 meters with two registering personal bests.
Competing unattached while redshirting this season, Nadia Maffo won the event with a throw of 60.87m/199-8. Three of her marks would have claimed the win. Finishing behind her was Hannah Chappell, who narrowly missed her personal best, landing a toss of 59.20m/194-2 on her fourth attempt.
Tahj'nee Thurston took third with her marks progressively getting better throughout the competition. The senior landed three throws that each surpassed her previous best of 54.91m/180-2. On her fifth attempt, she popped the sixth-best throw in program history at 58.96m/193-5.
Less than two feet behind her was Amelia DiPaola whose final throw of the competition of 58.48m/191-10 ranks eighth all-time at Fresno State. It was one inch behind seventh on the list. Her final four marks of the event surpassed her previous long of 55.53m/182-2.
The Fresno State Invitational continues tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT with the men's javelin opening the day. All events will be contest at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
