'Dog defense stifles Aggies

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State got back into the win column on Saturday afternoon with a 71-57 win over Utah State at the Save Mart Center. Slow to get going, the Bulldogs used a 44-point second half to snap Aggies' two-game winning streak.

Hanna Cavinder provided the 'Dogs with a game-high 23 points while matching her career high with four made 3-pointers. Playing every minute, Haley Cavinder continued stuffing the stat sheet with 19 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists to go with a season-high four steals. Wytalla Motta joined Haley with a double-double, giving the team 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Utah State got 21 points and 10 rebounds from Adryana Quezada but the Aggie was held to six points during the second half as Fresno State outscored USU by 17.

How It Happened
Trailing by three at the half (30-27) after shooting 30.6 percent in the opening 20 minutes, Fresno State swung the game into their favor in the third. Wytalla Motta set the tone to open the period scoring the Bulldogs' first eight points, six coming from a pair of and-1 conversions.

During the first eight-plus minutes, Fresno State was 7-of-11 shooting, outscoring Utah State 18-5 to take a 50-39 lead. The 'Dogs were 3-of-3 from outside during the run with two of those coming of the hands of Hanna Cavinder.

Fresno State held the Aggies to 34.8 percent shooting, and 0-of-6 from 3, during the final 20 minutes.

Team Notes

Fresno State has scored over 70 points in every win so far this season.
Four Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by Hanna Cavinder with 23, Haley Cavinder with 19, Wytalla Motta with 15 and Aimee Book with 10. Fresno State is 3-1 on the year with at least four in double figures.
The Bulldogs held a 21-12 advantage in points off turnovers. The nine-point difference in the category is the highest of the season for the 'Dogs against a DI opponent.
Fresno State grabbed 41 rebounds to Utah State's 39. The Bulldogs have outrebounded opponents six times in eight conference games.

Player Notes

Haley Cavinder had her 11th double-double of the season, recording 19 points and 12 rebounds. It was her seventh in the last eight games.
Haley was the team leader in rebounds for the 16th time this season.
Wytalla Motta earned her fourth double-double of the season (fifth career) with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Hanna Cavinder was the top scorer of the day for the fifth time this season with 23 points. This was also her fourth time scoring over 20 this year.
Fresno State is 4-0 on the year when Hanna reaches 20 points.
Amiee Book reached double figures for the second straight game, scoring 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting. It is the first time since the first week of the season that she has reached double figures in back-to-back games.
