'Dog defense stifles Aggies

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State got back into the win column on Saturday afternoon with a 71-57 win over Utah State at the Save Mart Center. Slow to get going, the Bulldogs used a 44-point second half to snap Aggies' two-game winning streak.
Hanna Cavinder provided the 'Dogs with a game-high 23 points while matching her career high with four made 3-pointers. Playing every minute, Haley Cavinder continued stuffing the stat sheet with 19 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists to go with a season-high four steals. Wytalla Motta joined Haley with a double-double, giving the team 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Utah State got 21 points and 10 rebounds from Adryana Quezada but the Aggie was held to six points during the second half as Fresno State outscored USU by 17.
How It Happened
Trailing by three at the half (30-27) after shooting 30.6 percent in the opening 20 minutes, Fresno State swung the game into their favor in the third. Wytalla Motta set the tone to open the period scoring the Bulldogs' first eight points, six coming from a pair of and-1 conversions.
During the first eight-plus minutes, Fresno State was 7-of-11 shooting, outscoring Utah State 18-5 to take a 50-39 lead. The 'Dogs were 3-of-3 from outside during the run with two of those coming of the hands of Hanna Cavinder.
Fresno State held the Aggies to 34.8 percent shooting, and 0-of-6 from 3, during the final 20 minutes.
Team Notes
The Bulldogs are on the road for the next two traveling to Boise State on Wednesday (5:30 p.m. PT) before heading to Nevada next Saturday (2 p.m. PT).
