SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Fresno State volleyball team closed out the Santa Clara Invitational on Sunday afternoon falling in four sets to Oklahoma at the Leavey Center.
Led by 11 kills from Lauren Sabbatini, Fresno State (4-5) claimed the third set of the match against the Sooners (7-2), but came up short falling 17-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-25.
How It Happened
The Sooners got off to a quick start winning the opening two sets using a 9-1 run in the middle of the opening set that took a 11-10 OU lead to 20-11 and saw a kill from Addison Haluska end the run. A solo block from Grace Doyle got the 'Dogs as close as six, but Oklahoma claimed went on to take the opening set by eight.
After Oklahoma ran away with the second set, the Bulldogs found success in the third set as a 3-0 run, including back-to-back kills from Sabbatini, broke a 18-18 tie. The Sooners answered back with a 4-1 run to knot the set at 22, but the 'Dogs came through in the clutch with three of the final four points in the set getting a kill from Sabbatini, blocks from Haluska & Kasey Purry and a kill from Haluska to get on the board.
Unfortunately, the Sooners made the fourth set brisk jumping out to a 11-1 lead. The 'Dogs were able to claw their way back into the set with a 7-1 run to get within four, but that would be as close as they would get against the Big 12 foe who went on to secure the four-set win.
