SALT LAKE CITY – Playing No. 19 BYU less than an hour from the Cougars' campus, Fresno State was defeated 85-56 on Friday night at the Delta Center. The game was determined by turnovers as BYU scored 36 points off turnovers.
Isaiah Hill had a team-high 14 points and Jalen Weaver joined him in double figures with 10. BYU's Jaxson Robinson and Spencer Johnson were each over 20 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State played it close in the early minutes, trailing 8-7 after a 3-pointer from Xavier DuSell just after the four-minute mark. But turnovers hit the 'Dogs early and BYU cashed them in, with the first four resulting in seven points as the Cougars built their lead up during an 11-0 run to go up 19-7 eight minutes in.
Attacking the basket, Jalen Weaver ended the drought with an and-one with 10:49 on the clock.
Back-to-back buckets from Jaxson Robinson gave the Cougars their largest lead of the half 16 with 8:17 on the clock. Fresno State's defense locked in at that point, holding BYU to just one of its next 10 attempts. The Bulldogs clawed back to within 11 at 31-21 with an 8-2 stretch but BYU made its last two buckets of the half to take a 36-23 advantage into the locker room.
With the deficit still at 13 just over 90 seconds, BYU struck. A bucket was followed by a pair of missed attempts and a turnover from the Bulldogs that resulted in an 8-0 run to force a timeout as Fresno State trailed 49-28.
The Bulldogs got the deficit back down to 16 with 10:14 to go but the Cougars hit a 14-2 run to stretch their lead to 72-44 during the next three-plus minutes.
