Bulldogs' second-half fight not enough in Vegas
12/28/2024 11:12:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LAS VEGAS – Despite a 13-2 run to open the second half, Fresno State was unable erase an 18-point halftime deficit at UNLV, falling 87-77 on Saturday night at Thomas & Mack Center. The Bulldogs scored 47 points in the second half while shooting 8-of-16 from 3.
The Bulldogs got a career night from Jasir Tremble who totaled 19 points in 22 minutes on 7-of-10 shooting, 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Mykell Robinson added 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
How It Happened
UNLV came out hot from deep, connecting on three of its first four attempts with two coming from Jailen Bedford. Eight points from the Rebel helped UNLV to a 15-6 lead through the opening six minutes. A quick 7-2 stretch with five points from Jasir Tremble pulled the 'Dogs back within four. Out of the media break, two quick buckets for the Rebels forced a timeout from the Bulldogs as they trailed 21-13.
The Runnin' Rebels' lead ballooned to 23 at 40-17 with under four minutes to go in the half as they had a stretch of 10-of-13 made shots in six minutes. Fresno State was just 1-of-10 from the field during the 23-4 Rebel run.
Five points in the last 30 seconds of the half cut the deficit to 48-30. Fresno State was outshot by 26.6% in the half as the Rebels shot a blistering 64.5% from the field and were 7-of-13 from deep (53.8%).
The Bulldogs were on the attack to start the second half, scoring the first seven. Following a layup in transition from Alex Crawford off a missed shot at the other end, UNLV called a timeout with the 'Dogs on an 11-2 run with less than three minutes off the clock.
But after the Bulldogs closed within seven at 50-43, a pair of 3-pointers gave UNLV some cushion. Fresno State answered with three consecutive 3-pointers from the left corner, the first two coming from Tremble and the third from Jalen Weaver. The 9-0 spurt brought the 'Dogs within four with 13:11 on the clock.
With Fresno State looking to get even closer on its next possession, a turnover in transition led to a fastbreak for the Rebels that turned into a seven-point possession for the home team. A foul by Elijah Price and subsequent technical foul call on Zaon Collins resulted in UNLV cashing in four free throws before knocking down a 3-pointer.
The sudden change led to the Rebels regaining their double-digit advantage. With its momentum gone, Fresno State could only get as close as nine the remainder of the night as UNLV built its lead back up to 18 with 2:45 remaining.
