'Dogs fall to UNLV in conference opener

LAS VEGAS - Fresno State fell to defending MW champions, UNLV in the Mountain West conference opener at Cox Pavilion on Sunday afternoon, 78-53.Â
For the second time this season Mariah Elohim led the Bulldogs in scoring with 15 points and Kylee Fox led with five rebounds. Mia Jacobs joined in, finishing the day with twelve points.Â
How it happenedÂ
Lady Rebels controlled from the tip to open on a 9-0 run through the first four minutes. After missing the basket for the first four minutes, Kylee Fox went for a fast break layup for the first points of the game. Mariah Elohim was 2-2 from the line to get the Bulldogs within one possession of tying with three minutes to go, 9-6. UNLV saw a 7-0 spurt as Fresno State went scoreless for just under two minutes. Avery Watkins handed the 'Dogs another two points with a turnaround jumper in the paint. UNLV held a double-digit lead after the first ten, 20-8.Â
Saga Ukkonen snapped a three minute scoring drought with a deep three from downtown. Mia Jacobs added in another three-pointer to get the 'Dogs in on a 6-2 scoring run. Suffering their largest deficit in the first half at 23, after a scoreless two minutes. Fox cut the scoring drought with a jumper in the paint. Holly Griffiiths packed one in off the glass with a second left on the shot clock. UNLV closed on an 11-2 run to hold a twenty-one-point lead at the half, 41-20.Â
At the half, Fresno State shot 28% from the field (7-of-25) to UNLV's 53% (16-of-30).Â
Mia Jacobs gets the wheels rolling opening the third quarter with a three-pointer followed by a layup. Ukkonen matches with a layup of her own for a 7-4 run in the first two minutes to start The hometown kid, Danae Powell, grabbed her first points of the game off a layup to cut the lead back down to 23.Â
A 5-5 run opens the final ten minutes of play. Fresno State cashes in a three-pointer by Elohim and Jacobs with a layup. UNLV gets in a quick three points before the Bulldogs land in a pair of threes from Fox and Elohim. Maria Konstantinidou fouls out with four minutes left to play, handing Laney Amundsen her first appearance since mid-December. Fresno State went scoreless for another four minutes before Elohim returned to the basket with a layup. Elohim went on a solo eight point run for the Bulldogs final points of the day. Â
