Bulldogs fall short against Broncos on Sunday afternoon

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Fresno State women's basketball team put forth a determined second half effort but came up short to Santa Clara at the Leavey Center on Sunday afternoon, 81-63. Â
Sophomore Ashlyn Rean had a standout afternoon coming off the bench to play for her first double-double, and second 20 point game this season, with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Rean was just four points shy of matching her career and season high 28 points. Jasia Gamble worked close behind totaling 14 points shooting nearly 40 percent from the field and with three blocks.Â
How it happened
After opening on a four minute scoring drought Ashlyn Rean brought the Bulldogs' back to work on a solo 8-0 scoring run. Rean stopped the Broncos 10- 0 scoring momentum and hit a string of buckets before taking a successful trip to the charity line. Diarrah Sissoko added on for a deep three to sit within one, eight minutes into play, 12-11.Â
Rean, Gamble and Hedda Koehne kept the score rolling for the Bulldogs. Rean was able to spark a short scoring run, 6-2.  Fresno State looked to cut in the lead after a deep three shot by the freshman Briana Webb. Santa Clara pushed through to close on an 8-0 run to lead by double-digits going into the halfÂ
Fresno State was back within reach down by five as the second half opened. Gamble was hot on the ball, owning six points on the teams 8-0 run in the opening minutes of the second half. 'Dogs were able to cut down the 14 point deficit to as low as two as the quarter winded down. Rean hit her 20 point mark within the paint and her time at the charity line got the 'Dogs within a possession, 47-45 with a minute to go in the quarter. A 6-3 run that favored Santa Clara put them back up by seven, 48-55.Â
Webb opened up the quarter with her second deep three of the day followed by Indiya Clarke on a layup. Ava Marr snapped the near five minute scoring drought from deep. Santa Clara pulled away with the lead midway through back up by double figures and a 14-5 run closed out the game.Â
