'Dogs outlasted by Spartans in double overtime

FRESNO, Calif. – In a game that saw 13 lead changes, with the majority coming late, Fresno State suffered its fourth overtime loss of the season, falling 94-91 in double overtime to San Jose on Tuesday night at the Save Mart Center.
The Bulldogs got a pair of 20-point performances from Jalen Weaver (23) and Zaon Collins (22), along with 19 from Brian Amuneke and 17 from Elijah Price. But the Spartans countered with 60 points combined from Latrell Davis (30) and Josh Uduje (30).
How It Happened
Unable to get its 3's to fall early, San Jose State instead took to the paint to get out to an early 11-6 lead with 10 of those coming from attacking the basket less than five minutes into the contest. The Spartans got two of its next three 3-pointers to fall to extend their lead to eight at 14-6, but Fresno State began to attack, seeing its next eight points coming inside. The Bulldogs cut the deficit to three until Josh Uduje scored four straight to bring his early total to 13.
After Donovan Yap gave SJSU its largest lead of the half at nine with 6:18 on the clock, the Bulldogs rallied back with a 9-2 run to close the half with four points coming from Jalen Weaver and a triple from Brian Amuneke.
Despite shooting just 1-of-6 from outside, the 'Dogs only trailed 31-29 at the half with 22 of their points coming from inside the paint.
A floater from Weaver a minute-and-a-half into the second gave Fresno State its first lead since the opening 30 seconds of the game. SJSU connected on six of its next seven shot attempts during a 12-3 run to go up 43-36.
The Bulldogs countered right back. A 14-2 run with five points coming from Weaver and four from Amuneke, saw the 'Dogs take a 50-45 advantage. A Zaon Collins triple ignited a stretch of 10 unanswered.
But just as the 'Dogs saw their 10, the Spartans answered back with 10 of their own to regain their five-point lead.
With 6:30 on the clock and the game tied at 57-all, a block by Weaver was turned into a dunk by Amuneke on the break. A stop on SJSU's next possession and Amuneke continued his run, sinking his third triple of the game to put the 'Dogs up 62-57.
The lead was then cut to 62-60, but an and-1 from Elijah Price fouled out SJSU center Robert Vaihola.
With the 'Dogs leading 67-60 after Weaver rattled in a floater with 2:19 to play, the Spartans tied the game up with a 7-0 run following a 3-pointer from Will McClendon with 32 seconds on the clock.
Alex Crawford had an attempt from 3 in the final seconds of regulation but it was off the mark.
Latrell Davis opened the first overtime with a 3-pointer for SJSU. The Spartan scored 17 of his 30 points in the two overtime periods.
With the 'Dogs trailing 73-71, a steal by Davis led to an and-1 at the other end of the for the Spartans. Collins though scored seven of the period's final nine points to bring the game level with under a minute on the clock.
With 58 seconds remaining, and the 'Dogs down by five, a jumper from Collins was followed by a bad pass from the Spartans and the ball found the hands of the Bulldog point guard. The sophomore forced his way to the cup for an and-1 to tie that contest at 78-all.
Collins then had a chance in the final seconds on a fadeaway along the baseline but his attempt rimmed out.
Tight in the second overtime, Davis responded after a dunk from Weaver that gave the 'Dog an 88-87 lead. The Spartan's third triple of the second extra period put the visitors up for good.
