'Dogs open season with 5-1 win

STANFORD, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team opened its season with a 5-1 win over Pacific on Friday afternoon at Stanford Stadium.
The Bulldogs (1-0) outhit the Tigers (0-2), 11-8, in the contest. Juniors Kennedy Bunker and Natalie Elias led the team at the plate with three hits apiece. Bunker went 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs, while Elias was 3-for-4 in the leadoff spot.
Junior left-handed pitcher Serayah Neiss picked up her first win of the season, throwing 3.2 innings and recording five strikeouts. Fellow junior Key-Annah Campbell-Pu'a earned a save, going 3.2 innings in her first appearance as a Bulldog.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Pacific opened the game with a solo home run, scoring the Tigers' only run of the afternoon.
Fresno State responded with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the inning, putting two runners on base. Bunker delivered an RBI single to tie the game. The bases were loaded after a fielder's choice, and Lauren Almeida drew an RBI walk to give the Bulldogs the lead.
In the top of the second, the Tigers had two runners on, but Neiss stranded them by striking out the side.
The Bulldogs added to their lead in the bottom of the third. Bunker hit a leadoff single, and Almeida brought her home with a base hit.
Fresno State plated two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. The bases were loaded after a leadoff hit from Elias was followed by a walk and an error by the second baseman. Bunker drew a walk to bring in a run, and Alyssa Orr followed with a sacrifice fly to score the final run of the game.
