3/1/2025 4:49:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's basketball dropped a double-digit lead that lasted well into the second half, coming up short by four against New Mexico at the Save Mart Center on Saturday afternoon, 65-61.Â
Mia Jacobs hit her next career milestone on a deep three to mark 1,000 points at Fresno State. Jacobs becomes the third Bulldog to join the 1,000 point club in two seasons, totaling 1,001. The junior also tabbed her 17th double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds.Â
How it happenedÂ
Fresno State opened on one of their best starts this season, outscoring New Mexico 25-7 in the first quarter. Bulldogs held a ten point lead as the first five minutes rounded out. Jacobs and Kylee Fox claimed all the shots, with twelve and five points, respectively. Saga Ukkonen joined to start the 11-0 scoring run that closed out the quarter. Ukkonen hit a solo 5-0 run and Maria Konstantinidou owned the remaining six points. Konstantinidou handed up one last layup for an 18 point lead, 25-7.Â
Fresno State pushed their lead as large as 22 points to open the second period as Jacobs and Mariah Elohim released a set of back-to-back three's. New Mexico hit some tempo coming into ten points of the Bulldogs on a 12-3 spurt. Rayna Williams' was the last on the ball for either side after a 1-of-1 trip to the charity line. Fresno State continued to hold their double-digit lead at the half, 37-26.
'Dogs got a 5-0 run to start the second half after Jacobs (2-of-2) and Ukkonen got the ball rolling. Sta. Maria saw her first points of the day on a driving layup. A six minute scoring drought was more than enough time for the Lobos to bounce back and eliminate the Bulldogs lead to tie up with under a minute, 44-44. Jacobs stepped up to the line making both baskets, but a last second attempt by the Lobos Lauro knotted it up once again, 46-46. Â
Fresno State controlled the lead for the first six minutes of the final period. Jacobs hit a big three-pointer to mark 1,000 points as a Bulldog. New Mexico took over in the final two minutes for a five point lead on a 6-0 run. Ukkonen grabbed the final basket for the Bulldogs with fifteen seconds to play. Lobos Cumber's 1-of-1 trip to the line sealed their four point lead, 64-61.Â
