Bulldogs Take Set Off Utah State in Road Loss

LOGAN, Utah – Fresno State volleyball battled back after dropping the first two sets but ultimately fell to Utah State in four sets (11-25, 16-25, 25-23, 21-25) Thursday afternoon at Kirby Court in the Wayne Estes Center.
The Bulldogs moved to 5-9 overall and 0-3 in Pac-12 play with the loss.
Jenna Legault led Fresno State with 11 kills, seven digs and three service aces. Kiley Devery added nine kills and two blocks, while Brooke Jenkins finished with eight kills, eight digs and an ace. At the net, Andee May led the Bulldogs with six blocks as Fresno State totaled nine team blocks. Anna Bolich recorded a team-high 16 assists, along with six digs and an ace, while Gabby Lombardi added 12 assists and eight digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Utah State jumped out to an early advantage, using a four-point run to build an 8-2 lead.
Devery ended the run with a kill, and the Bulldogs later put together consecutive points behind an Aggie attack error and a block from May and Gabby Lombardi to cut the deficit to 9-5.
Utah State responded and stretched its lead to 16-6. Gabby Lombardi stopped the run with a kill before Brooklyn Washington and Legault helped Fresno State add points down the stretch.
Legault recorded the Bulldogs' lone ace of the frame to make it 18-9, but Utah State maintained control and closed the opening set with a 25-11 win.
The Aggies carried their momentum into the second set, opening an 8-1 advantage before Washington and Devery recorded back-to-back kills for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State began to chip away at the deficit midway through the frame. After trailing 12-7, the Bulldogs rattled off three straight points behind a Washington-Smart block, a Utah State attack error and a Washington kill to pull within two at 12-10.
Legault kept the Bulldogs within striking distance with a pair of kills, but Utah State answered with a three-point run to push its lead to 17-11.
Jenkins and Legault combined for Fresno State's final four kills of the set before the Aggies closed out the frame, 25-16.
Fresno State responded in the third set, beginning with a Bolich service ace on the opening point.
After Utah State took a 5-2 lead, the Bulldogs battled back. A May-Legault block sparked the response before a Devery kill pulled Fresno State within one at 8-7.
Legault then took over from the service line. After Devery's kill, Legault delivered back-to-back aces as part of a four-point Bulldog run that turned an 8-6 deficit into a 10-8 lead.
Fresno State continued to build momentum behind its defense at the net. A May-Devery block pushed the lead to 13-9, and May followed with a kill to give the Bulldogs a 15-10 advantage.
Utah State rallied late, erasing a 23-20 Fresno State lead with three straight points to tie the set at 23.
The Bulldogs answered. May put Fresno State at set point with a kill before Jenkins delivered a service ace to secure the 25-23 win and extend the match.
Fresno State carried its momentum into the fourth set, jumping ahead 5-2 behind two Legault kills and a block from Washington.
The teams traded runs from there, with Utah State pulling even at 5-5 before the Bulldogs reclaimed the advantage. Devery and Jenkins helped Fresno State stay in front, and consecutive points from Legault and an Aggie attack error gave the Bulldogs a 12-10 lead.
