Miller Lung crowned MW 100 breaststroke champion

HOUSTON - Fresno State grabs multiple podium finishes in the third day of the Credit Union 1 MW Championships to move up into fifth place with 644 points.Â
Mackenzie Miller Lung is Fresno State's first event champion of the meet. Miller Lung collected a time of 58.17 in the 100 breaststroke, breaking a five-year championship record in the process. Aliz Kalmar returned to the podium for the 100 breaststroke for the second time in her career.Â
How it happenedÂ
Fresno State put forth another strong preliminary showing on Friday morning. Bulldogs would see nine qualify into finals. The Bulldog underclassmen represented well in the 100 back prelims. Sophomore Sienna Cheng Lucey earned her first championship final appearance as the sixth seed (53.66). Hayley Oke and Ryley Clark put up times to qualify in the consolation heat.Â
It was all Bulldogs in the 100 breast prelims, with a team high four qualifiers.In the morning session, defending title holder Jenna Pulkkinen touched with a time of 59.76 to take the fourth seed. Kalmar sat comfortably as the third seed (59.73) and Miller Lung took the top seed on a time of 58.35. Brooke Beavuais qualified into the bonus final on a new season best (1:02.94).Â
Fresno State opened the finals session with a new program record in the 200 medley relay (1:37.34) to place them on the podium with a bronze medal. Franzi Djatej earned the heat win for the bonus final in the 200 butterfly (2:02.14) and Clare Luken finished close behind with a 2:02.88. In her first championship final race, Cheng Lucey put up a time of 54.51, good for eighth in the event. Oke swam a new personal best (53.82) for 11th in the event and Clark in 13th place.Â
Miller Lung swam seamlessly to be crowned the new 100 breaststroke champion, touching 1.2 seconds ahead of silver medalist Lundgren. The senior set a new championship record of 58.17, breaking a five-year record set by SDSU (59.14) in 2021. Miller Lung punches her ticket to the 2026 NCAA Championships. The final medal was a close contest between Kalmar and Pulkkinen. Kalmar touched just hundredth faster than Pulkkinen to return to the podium for the second time in her career.Â
In the diving well, Natalia Bedolla, Grace Ally and Parker Connor put together six consistent dives across all three diving disciplines to place third in the team event. After round three, the diving team stayed at the top in podium position the rest of the way.Â
