Fresno State found early momentum behind its defense. Danae Powell came up with a steal and converted a layup to put the Bulldogs in front. Morelia Chavez added points at the line, and Jaisa Gamble turned defense into offense with a steal and fast-break layup to tie the game at 10-10 midway. Emilia Long knocked down free throws in the closing seconds to even the score at 14-14, but San Diego State answered with a late layup to take a 16-14 lead after ten.
Bulldogs' continued to attack the paint in the second. Chavez scored on back-to-back looks to trim the deficit, and Djessira Diawara pulled Fresno State within one. Long's layup gave the Bulldogs a 24-23 advantage halfway through the quarter. Ava Marr added a much needed 3-pointer in the final minute to keep Fresno State within striking distance, but a late Aztec basket sent the Bulldogs into halftime trailing 31-27.
Long sparked a quick 6-0 burst with a jumper and a steal-and-score sequence in transition to cut the deficit to two at 35-33. Powell followed with a pair of free throws to tie the game at 35-35. San Diego State responded with consecutive 3-pointers, Avery Watkins and Diawara each contributed inside to keep the Bulldogs close. Diawara's put back layup with just over two minutes remaining trimmed the margin to five, but the Aztecs closed the quarter on a run to extend the lead to 51-42 heading into the fourth.
