LAS VEGAS – The Fresno State men's basketball team saw its Mountain West Tournament run come to an end on Wednesday night, falling to Colorado State, 67–63, at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Despite leading at halftime, the Bulldogs were unable to hold off a second-half push by the Rams, who used strong perimeter shooting and timely free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Fresno State finished the game shooting 24-of-52 from the field (46.2%) and held a halftime lead after a strong opening 20 minutes. However, Colorado State outscored the Bulldogs 40–31 in the second half to take control late.
Jake Heidbreder led Fresno State with a game-high 26 points, knocking down four three-pointers and going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line while playing all 40 minutes. Gasper Kocevar added 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting, and DeShawn Gory recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Colorado State was paced by Jase Butler's 20 points, including six three-pointers, while Carey Booth added 18 points and six rebounds for the Rams.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State came out strong in the opening half, building an early lead behind efficient interior scoring and strong defensive play. Heidbreder connected on a pair of early three-pointers while Kocevar controlled the paint with several finishes around the rim. The Bulldogs extended their advantage to as many as six late in the half and carried a 32–27 lead into the break after Kocevar scored inside in the final seconds.
The Bulldogs briefly pushed their lead to eight early in the second half following back-to-back three-pointers from Gory. Colorado State responded with a steady run fueled by outside shooting from Butler and transition opportunities off turnovers. A three-pointer from Jevin Muniz midway through the half gave the Rams their first lead of the second period.
From there, the teams traded baskets in a tightly contested finish. Fresno State stayed within striking distance behind Heidbreder's scoring, but Colorado State converted key free throws and defensive stops in the final minutes to hold off the Bulldogs and seal the four-point victory.
