'Dogs fall to Lady Rebels in quarterfinals
3/8/2026 9:27:00 PM | Women's Basketball
LAS VEGAS - The Fresno State women's basketball team ends their time in Las Vegas falling to UNLV in the quarterfinal matchup at the Thomas & Mack Center on Sunday night, 79-65.Â
Three Bulldogs finished the night in double-figures with Emilia Long leading the team with 19 points, followed by Danae Powell on 17 and Avery Watkins with 16 points on the night. Watkins held the most consistent shooting with a 6-of-9 showing from the field and 2-of-2 from both beyond the arc and the charity line.Â
How it happenedÂ
Lady Rebels opened with a 8-0 run. First field goal came from Avery Watkins on a deep three. Watkins stepped to the line to tack on two more (2-2), to trail six behind the Lady Rebels. Fresno State found more support from the charity line with Emilia Long (2-2), 11-7. Hedda Koehne added on a shot from inside the paint before UNLV hit stride for an eight point separation, 18-9. [13-2 run for UNLV for over 2:32 at 1:12). Jaisa Gamble cut that run in the final secondsÂ
Fresno State put forth more balanced scoring the next ten, staying on a similar offensive pace with the lady rebels, 15-12. Watkins opened with the first two baskets as Morelia Chavez dropped in a much needed three-pointer. Both teams traded small spurts of runs back-and-forth for the next two minutes. The first half ended with a set of tree throw baskets from both ends of the court. Last on the line, UNLV went into the half up by an additional two points, 41-27.Â
Fresno State came out of halftime looking to chip away, getting an early second-chance trip that led to a free throw and a quick jumper from Long, but UNLV answered with threes to keep the momentum. Bulldogs found offense inside and from deep. Watkins buried a three, and Fresno State continued to attack the paint—but a mid-quarter stretch of turnovers helped the Rebels push the margin.
Fresno State sank in a pair of deep threes from Long and Powell to start the final ten. Watkins put in the turnaround jumper mid-way through the period. Bulldogs found some footing with a 7-0 run from Long and Powell. Fresno State put up three 3PFG in the final period with Powell owning two. Long hit the final points of the night from the line, 79-65.Â
