Bulldogs drop MWC opening round to Lobos in Reno

RENO, Nev. - The Fresno State softball team season came to an end in Reno on Wednesday afternoon, as the Bulldogs dropped a 7-2 contest against New Mexico in the opening game of the 2026 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Softball Championship. Â
How it happenedÂ
Lauryn Carranco opened the game smoothly going three up, three down in the first followed by back-to-back strikeouts in the second inning. New Mexico struck first in the bottom of the third inning on a two run home run.Â
Fresno State cut the deficit in half in the fourth, as Rylee Bocchini delivered a two-out single through the right side that plated pinch runner Ava Tingey from third to make it a 2-1 ballgame.Â
The Lobos responded in the bottom of the fourth, as another two-run home run extended their lead, 4-1. Kealani Nitta's first double of the season came in good timing, opening the fifth. Emma Martinez pushed Nitta for third on a line out. Nitta scored the second run of the day on a wild pitch. Carranco got her third strikeout of the game to close out the fifth but Lobos put up their third two run home run of the day.Â
New Mexico tallied in another run off an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Bulldogs walked with Olivia Hill but the next two Bulldog batters grounded out, calling game.Â
