Former 'Dog Morelia Chavez qualifies to 2027 FIBA AmeriCup

FRESNO, Calif. - Former Fresno State women's basketball player Morelia Chavez completed her run in the 2026 FIBA Women's AmeriCup Centrobasket Qualifiers representing the Mexico Women's National Team.Â
Chavez averaged 5.2 points, 1.6 rebounds and 5.6 minutes per game over the tournament. The power forward put up 10 points against Nicaragua and 16 points against the Bahamas in the group phase. Chavez shot 45% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc and a solid 83% from the free throw line.Â
Mexico opened the tournament with a 3-0 run in the Group A stage taking down Nicaragua (103-66), Dominican Republic (75-64) and Bahamas (81-67). A 65-62 win over the U.S. Virgin Islands clinched Mexico's spot in the AmeriCup. Mexico faced off against Puerto Rico in the final game but fell, 82-62.Â
The FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2027 will be held in San Salvador, El Salvador at the Gimnasio Nacional Adolfo Pineda from July 3 through July 11th.Â
