'Dogs outlast Dons in five sets

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Fresno State volleyball team outlasted San Francisco in five sets (25-21, 25-14, 18-25, 15-25, 15-13) on Friday afternoon at Premier America Credit Union Arena. The Bulldogs improved to 3-4 on the season with their third win in their last four matches.
Jenna Legault led Fresno State with a season-high 21 kills on .271 hitting, adding three service aces. Peyton Bitter finished with nine kills and three blocks, while Brooklyn Washington added six kills without an error on 12 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage. The Bulldogs totaled 10 blocks as a team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State took control early, using a 4-0 run in the first set that included a Kiley Devery kill and a Devery-Andee May block to build a 5-1 advantage. The Bulldogs continued to create separation, taking an 11-5 lead before later extending the margin to 18-11 behind a Legault kill.
San Francisco responded with a late push to cut Fresno State's lead to 20-19, but the Bulldogs answered. Legault recorded four kills over Fresno State's final six points, including the set-clinching swing, to give the Bulldogs a 25-21 win.
The Bulldogs carried the momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 9-2 advantage. Gabby Lombardi recorded an ace during the early run before Legault followed with back-to-back aces to push Fresno State's lead to 12-3.
Fresno State continued to pull away behind its defense at the net. Washington and Devery combined for a block before Brooke Jenkins followed with a solo block during a 4-0 run that extended the lead to 20-8. Mya Sellers later recorded her first kill of the match before Jenkins closed the set with a kill to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-0.
The third set remained close early before San Francisco used a 5-0 run to turn a 9-8 lead into a 14-8 advantage.
Fresno State continued to battle behind kills from Legault, Bitter and Jenkins, but the Dons maintained their advantage. A Bitter-May block helped the Bulldogs fight off one set point before San Francisco took the next point to force a fourth set.
The teams traded points early in the fourth set before San Francisco used a 5-0 run to take a 9-5 lead. Fresno State answered with blocks from Devery, May, Washington and Jenkins, but the Dons extended their advantage to 16-9.
Trailing 22-11, the Bulldogs put together a late 4-0 push that included a Bitter-Washington block and a Washington kill, but San Francisco responded with the final three points to send the match to a decisive fifth set.
San Francisco opened the deciding set with a 4-2 lead before Legault sparked a 4-0 Fresno State run. The senior recorded a kill and an ace before adding another kill to give the Bulldogs their first lead of the set at 5-4.
After the Dons regained a 7-6 advantage, Fresno State answered with another 4-0 run. Legault tied the set with a kill before an attack error, an Alivia Schneider kill and a Washington kill pushed the Bulldogs ahead 10-7. San Francisco made one final push to pull within 14-13, but Bitter delivered the match-winning kill to secure the five-set victory.
