FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State volleyball team fell to New Mexico State in four sets (23-25, 25-15, 16-25, 24-26) on Friday night at the Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs moved to 1-4 on the season.
Jenna Legault led the Bulldogs with 20 kills on .269 hitting, adding 14 digs, three service aces and three blocks for her second double-double of the season. Kiley Devery added 12 kills, while Andee May finished with seven kills on .600 hitting and a team-high five blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State took an early 4-1 advantage behind back-to-back blocks and a service ace from Olivia Lombardi in the opening set. The teams traded points throughout the middle of the frame before a May ace and a Brooke Jenkins block gave the Bulldogs a 17-15 lead.
New Mexico State responded with five straight points to take a 22-18 advantage. Fresno State fought back, cutting the deficit to 24-23 behind a pair of Legault kills, but the Aggies took the next point to secure the opening set.
The Bulldogs responded with their strongest offensive set of the night, hitting .545 with 14 kills and just two errors. The teams were tied at 13 before Fresno State took control with a 7-1 run. May and Legault combined for a block before Legault followed with an ace and kills from Devery and Legault pushed the advantage to 20-14.
Fresno State closed the frame with five unanswered points. May sparked the run with an ace before Devery delivered back-to-back kills, helping the Bulldogs even the match at one set apiece.
The Aggies built an early 5-2 advantage in the third set before Fresno State pulled even at 6-6 behind a Legault ace and a May block.
New Mexico State answered with seven straight points to take a 13-6 lead. The Bulldogs attempted to chip away at the deficit with kills from Legault, Brooklyn Washington, Devery and May, along with a Gabby Lombardi ace, but the Aggies maintained their advantage to take the third set.
New Mexico State jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the final set before Fresno State began working its way back. A Gabby Lombardi ace capped a 4-0 Bulldog run to cut the deficit to 8-5.
Trailing 19-14 later in the set, Fresno State mounted another rally. Legault sparked a 4-0 run with a kill and an ace to pull the Bulldogs within one at 19-18. After the Aggies pushed their lead back to 22-19, a Washington kill and a Washington-Peyton Bitter block helped Fresno State tie the frame at 22.
New Mexico State reached match point at 24-23, but Legault answered with her 20th kill of the night to tie the set once again. The Aggies responded with consecutive kills to take the set, 26-24, and close out the match.
