The third annual FedEx Cup took place last weekend and
former Bulldog star, Nick Watney, was a big contender in the tournament. Watney entered the tournament ranked 28th
in the PGA tour, and finished the tournament in 12th place with 880
points, just 2,100 points behind the champion.
The winner of the tournament was Jim Furyk, who ended the
cup with 2,980 points. Furyk turned pro
back in 1992 and has been playing great golf during his journey on the PGA
tour. Watney turned pro in 2003 and has shown
that he can keep up with all of the best veteran golfers. Furyk and Watney both have seven top ten
finishes in the 2010 season.Â
Watney made his mark at the 2010 FedEx Cup by setting all
sorts of records over the weekend. He played
the best round of the week earning a score of 63. Watney played the best back nine that the
golf course has ever seen in its' history with a score of 28 and played the
best overall East Lake Golf Course nine holes which tied him with Tiger Woods'
score at the course. Watney also had the
lowest nine hole score for the season.Â
The records he set didn't stop there. Watney's nine birdies that he shot at the
FedEx Cup were the most par breakers he's ever had in his career. This was also the most birdies that a tour
championship has ever seen since 1990. The
former Bulldog star shot birdies consecutively from hole 8-13 which has him
tied for the best birdie streak of the season.Â

TOPSoccer is the Outreach Program for soccer. It is for players with special needs whether they be physically or mentally challenged. TOPSoccer allows players to participate from the age of 4 through adult. There are no boundaries. TOPSoccer has been in existence for 10 years. Director Gary Waltz has been coaching soccer for more than 20 years, and has been doing TOPSoccer for 9 years in District VII.
Last season, the 'Dogs spent a couple of hours before the season started with TOPSoccer players. The team helped with a clinic and then invited all that attended the clinic to a game.
Former Bulldog golf star Nick Watney is making a big name
for himself on the PGA tour. He started his
professional golf career back in 2003 after he finished is collegiate play at
Fresno State. This week he is getting
ready for the third annual FedEx Cup Championship which starts on
Thursday. He has been working hard in
the 2010 season on his journey to make it into the top 30 and qualify for this
prestigious tournament.
The road to the FedEx Cup started with the Barclays
tournament played at the Ridgewood Country Club in New Jersey. The top 125 golfers in the PGA tour were invited
to play in this event and this was considered the start of the road to the
FedEx Cup. Watney tied for 36th
place at the Barclays and was able to continue on to compete in the next big
tournament in Massachusetts.
After the Barclays, the top 100 golfers continued on to play
at the Deutsche Bank Championship at the Tournament Players Club of
Boston. Watney improved his game and finished
this tournament tied in 33rd place.Â
The final stop before the FedEx Cup was the BMW Championship
at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club in Lemont, Illinois. The top 70 leaders were invited to play in
this tournament and Watney did extremely well and finished tied for 17th
place. Â
All of his hard work has paid off and Watney is going to
play in the FedEx Cup at the end of this week along with the rest of the top 30
golfers in the PGA tour. The FedEx Cup
will be held in Atlanta, Georgia on the East Lake Golf Course. The course is 7,154 yards long with a par of
70. Â Â The winner of the FedEx Cup will
receive $1,305,000. This tournament was
first played in 2007 and Tiger Woods currently holds the champion title for
this Cup. Official competition begins
Thursday Sept. 23 and will conclude on Sunday Sept. 26. Live updates from the tournament can be found

Former Fresno State pitcher Justin Wilson won his second championship playing minor league ball in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. The College World Series winning pitcher has one six championships in a row dating back to his days at Buchannan High School. Wilson won championships at Buchannan, Fresno State and with two different minor league affiliates of the Pirates. His most treasured championship is the 2008 National Championship with the Bulldogs.
The last time the Bulldogs played Utah State on the road in Logan there was an exciting finish in the final seconds. Kicker Kevin Goessling hit a career-high and Fresno State record of a 58-yard field goal lifting the 'Dogs over the Aggies as time expired.

Bulldog Volleyball returned to the floor at the Save Mart Center Saturday afternoon in their first match day two of the Fresno State Invitational in a head on, seesaw battle against the Hornets of Sacramento State. After competing in five sets of highly competitive play, the Dogs came back with a fighting spirit and beat the Hornets, 3-2.Â
The Dogs and Hornets alternated sets, with Sac State capturing the win in the first, 25-14. Fresno State blasted onto the scene with aggressive play in the second set, getting a quick 25-13 set win.Â
Then the Hornets came back with a fight in the third to a 25-11 set win. But the Bulldogs weren't ready to give up, and brought the match to a 2-2 tie at the end of the fourth set, 25-12, sending the Dogs into a fifth set battle that ended with a 15-13 Fresno State set win, and 3-2 match victory over the Hornets.
Next up for the Dogs is their second and final match of the Fresno State Invitational this evening at 7 p.m. PT against Cal State Bakersfield.
 Senior quarterback Ryan Colburn leads the WAC and ranks second in the NCAA in passing efficiency 208.1. Northwestern's Dan Persa leads the nation at 212.35. Colburn opened his senior season with an impressive performance that included matching his career- high with four touchdown passes. He connected with four different receivers for the scores in the game.

Colburn is the latest in a long line of great quarterbacks to wear the Bulldog jersey. Entering his second year as the starting quarterback, Colburn has been named to the Manning and Unitas Award watch lists. In 2009, Colburn was ranked No. 20 in the NCAA in passing efficiency last season (143.71).

He has thrown 16 touchdowns and only five interceptions over his last 10 games dating back 2009. Colburn directed an offense that ranked No. 14 in the NCAA in scoring (33.85) and 17th in total offense (430.54).

Fresno State is well known for producing top notch quarterbacks. Some the best to come out of Fresno include, Kevin Sweeney, Mark Barsotti, Billy Volek, David Carr, Trent Dilfer, Paul Pinegar and Tom Brandstater.

Volek (San Diego Chargers), Carr (San Francisco 49ers) and Brandstater (New York Giants) are still playing in the NFL. Dilfer currently works for ESPN as a football analysts and recently was at Bulldog Stadium as a part of the broadcast.
The Fresno State football team is within inches or votes of reaching the Top 25 in the AP Poll. The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 27 with 48 votes after the first two weeks of the 2010 football season. It was the 'Dogs huge win over two-time defending Big East Champion Cincinnati that caught the eye of many around the nation.
During preseason the 'Dogs were not receiving votes, but after their impressive 28-14 win over Cincinnati people started to notice the Bulldogs. In the first week of polling Fresno State received 24 votes and now after the second week the Bulldogs are No. 27. The Bulldogs were down 14-0 with a little over two minutes left in the first half, before the 'Dogs went on 28-0 run snapping the Bearcats 18-game regular season winning streak.
The last time that Fresno State was in the Top 25 was the beginning of the 2008 season. The Bulldogs spent three weeks in the Top 25 and climbed as high as No. 21 country.
It's
almost that time of year again for the Save Mart Center to fill with passionate
basketball fans. Â The men's basketball
team starts their regular season campaign during Fresno State's Centennial academic
year on Wednesday, Nov. 17 against Vanguard at 8 p.m.

The 'Dogs
have been working hard all summer in the weight room and the gym. They are more than ready to tip off at home in
front of all their fans.

Last
season the 'Dogs recorded a 12-5 record during their home games, which tied for
the second most wins in the arena's history.Â
They are 77-38 overall in games played at the Save Mart Center. The team is ready to continue to their
impressive winning record at home and encourage all Bulldog fans to get their season
tickets early and get ready to fill the seats with Bulldog Spirit.Â

The
Bulldog's home court is located on the South East corner of campus and can hold
as many as 15,596 fans.

This
season the men's basketball team is scheduled for 16 home games. Seven of those contests will be Bulldog
doubleheaders and will fill the Save Mart Center with double the action. This means that the men's and women's
basketball team will be playing home games on the same night at the Save Mart
Center. On these nights, the women's
team will tip off at 6 p.m. and the men's game will start around 8 p.m.Â

Head coach
Steve Cleveland is returning for his sixth season with the Bulldogs this
year. In Cleveland's second year with
Fresno State he led the 'Dogs to a 22-10 record which was the most wins for the
Bulldogs since the 1995-96 season.

Returning
to the court this season are fan favorites: senior Nedeljko Golubovic, junior
Steven Shepp and sophomores Jerry Brown Garrett Johnson and 2010 WAC Freshman
of the Year Greg Smith.

Junior
Jonathan Wills, who joined the team last season, but had to redshirt as a
transfer from New Mexico, will compete for immediate playing time in his first
season on the floor and sophomore Justin Johnson is working to return from a
knee injury.

The newcomers
who will be wearing the Bulldog uniform this season are: Bracken Funk, Tyler
Johnson, Kevin Olekaibe, John Ryan, and Tim Steed. Two more additions have joined the team and
will be announced in the near future.

Last
season, Smith scored 230 points at home, just 20 less than new NBA draft star
Paul George tallied in his final year as a Bulldog in 2009-10. Smith practiced hard all summer and expects
to be bigger and better this year.

The
Bulldogs have a great mix of veterans and fresh faces on the team with the
potential to make a huge statement this year.Â
The hard work during the end of summer training camp and fall sessions
have led to high anticipation for the home opening game night.Â

Prior to its Saturday debut at 6 p.m. MST with a Fresno State at Utah State football showdown, an additional six television affiliates are confirmed for the WAC Sports Network.

A total of 24 affiliates in 16 markets now comprise the WAC Sports Network (WSN). The Western Athletic Conference and its multimedia rights partner Learfield Sports announced the launch of the Network last month, and since have announced three initial games and a seven-member football broadcast team.Â

The WSN's additional coverage is comprised of affiliates in San Francisco, Salt Lake City, New Orleans, St. George, UT and Comcast Hometown Channel, which has significant penetration into California.

Leading WSN as football play-by-play announcers will be Dave Harbison and Guy Haberman, with Dick Tomey and Joe Glenn serving as color commentators. Sideline reporters are Lauren Mickler and Jenny Cavnar, with Ralph Gaston as color and sideline.
Last Friday the Fresno State women's soccer team held its second free clinic to youth soccer players. Over 200 youth soccer players from across the Valley attended one of two sessions. The clinic was such a success that we received this from the Toy Family.

Steve and his family have been a blessing to our program and we will

Steve Cleveland returned to his hometown of Fresno, Calif. in 2005 to resurrect the Bulldog men's basketball program. Fresno State is an institution that serves as the pride of the San Joaquin Valley and Cleveland's leadership ability has helped deliver a culture committed to academic excellence and compliance with the talent for lasting success on the hardwood.
When the 'Dogs tip off the 2010-11 season in sixty days at the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah, it will mark the sixth season and Day 2,043 of the Cleveland Era. The evening will serve as a launching pad for the next stage of the "Built to Last" philosophy developed by Cleveland with a focus on securing a solid foundation for the present and future.
The incredible journey of the past five seasons has featured significant accomplishments, including these five key highlights:
• Cleveland directed the nation's largest Academic Progress Rate (APR) improvement and lifted the Bulldogs to a score of 928 in this spring's release of 2008-09 figures and the graduation of a program-record number of student-athletes over a one year period from 2008 to 2009. Â
• Two Bulldogs (Paul George and Dominic McGuire) were picked in the NBA Draft. George became the highest selection in program history when the Indiana Pacers used the No. 10 overall pick in this past June's draft on the entertaining and talented small forward from Palmdale, Calif. The Washington Wizards drafted McGuire in the second round of the 2007 NBA Draft.
• The classroom performance of Nedeljko Golubovic, a psychology major, was recognized twice as a prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree.
BERKELEY, Calif. -- With a 3-1 victory over the Big East's Seton Hall under their belt to win their opener of the HGI Classic, the Fresno State volleyball team returns to Haas Pavilion today for a double feature against a pair of schools from the University of California system - UC Davis and No. 10 California.
Last night, the 'Dogs displayed a focused energy on offense and systematically attacked Seton Hall with a tenacious mentality.
Two Bulldogs in their second seasons as Bulldogs stepped up in the four-set win. Marissa Brand delivered a career-best 19 kills and Kelli Parker led Fresno State on an 8-1 run in a crucial third set comeback to pull away from the Pirates.
After the match, head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell reflected on the progress of Brand, who has shown she can play a variety of positions for the Bulldogs and her talent is molding into a critical piece of the offense. Netherby-Sewell also commended Parker for her aggressive service performance, a point of emphasis for the 'Dogs this season, and consistently forced Seton Hall into having a difficult time getting into their offense.
The keys will again highlight the ability of the team to use their confidence and talent to compete for every point.
Here is the Bulldogs' schedule for today's matches:
•  UC Davis 3, Fresno State 0 In the morning session of the 2010 HGI Classic, Fresno State fell 3-0 to UC Davis on set scores of 14-25, 17-25 and 22-25.
The Bulldogs came out swinging in set one with junior Kelli Parker scoring the 'Dogs first three points on three kills to help jolt Fresno State to a 10-6 lead. UC Davis then caught fire with an 11-0 run to send the Aggies ahead 17-10 and secured the three-game sweep led the UCD's Betsy Sedlak, who recorded a .550 hitting percentage with 11 kills on 20 attacks.
Junior Brianna Clarke continued her steady attacking with a .462 hitting percentage on six kills over 13 attacks. Kelly Mason dug 17 shots and Marissa Brand added seven kills.
Fresno State is now 3-4 on the season and dropped to 2-1 at neutral site contests.
Fresno State, under the leadership of third-year head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell, embraces every opportunity to compete against the top tier programs to establish her expectation of competing at the highest level and fostering the growth and development of a young and talented roster.
The HGI Classic is the final road tournament of the season for the 'Dogs with each opponent providing Fresno State a chance to build for the upcoming conference slate of games.

TANAGURA, Japan-- The Fresno State men's golf team is
experiencing a wet start to their Centennial season. Tropical storm Malou has rained out the
original start for the Topy Cup. The
storm recorded rainfalls at 4 inches per hour in some areas. The tournament was scheduled to begin on
Thursday morning and has now been pushed back to start Friday morning. The new plan is to play 36 holes on Friday
and 18 holes on Saturday.
The Bulldogs have been allowed to walk the course to see
what they will be facing in the upcoming competition days. They are in great spirits and still ready to
play as soon as the course is clear. The
course is 7,127 yards with a par of 72.Â
Fresno State was one of four men's teams chosen from the United
States to travel to Japan to compete in this 28th annual
tournament. The Japanese Golf
Association paid for the Bulldogs' head men's golf coach Mike Watney and five student-athletes
to travel to Tanagura for the Cup. The
five Bulldogs on the road are: Bhavik Patel, Bryan Hogan, Michael Gideon, Brian
Sunker, and Nate Jessup.Â

The Save Mart Center is full of Bulldog spirit tonight.
The Fresno State volleyball team is taking on their
crosstown rivals, the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds, in their sixth annual
exhibition match. Last year the 'Dogs
won their first sets against the Sunbirds and are ready to do even better this
year.
The Fresno State Bulldog Beat is also in the house tonight
bringing more beat than ever to entertain all of the fans in the building. They have two electric guitars and a drummer joining
the traditional band to keep the Bulldog spirit in high gear.
To hype up the showdown even more, the Bulldogs have
established tonight as "Greek Night" to encourage sororities and fraternities
to come out and support the team.Â
"This is our first volleyball game as a fraternity, but it
definitely will not be our last," said Forrest from the Sigma Alpha Epsilon
fraternity. "We have talked about this
night at our last two meetings and all of our pledges are coming with signs. We are excited to cheer on the volleyball
team."
Whichever Greek group has the most attendance at tonight's
game will win a date with the entire volleyball team.
Tonight is a great match because there are fans from all
over the city of Fresno supporting these two great programs. The stands are filled with red and orange and
the cheering is rattling the walls. The
student-athletes are definitely feeling the pride for their schools in the
atmosphere.Â

plunder. Contrary to the belief of some, Australia is a bit more than

there are a plethora of fun facts about Australia that probably go
unnoticed. For example, no part of the country is more than 621 miles
from the ocean or a beach. Conversely, the Australian Alps, also known as the
Snowy Mountains, receive more snow than Switzerland. Australia is home to
the largest cattle ranch (station) in the world at 30,028 sq. kilometers,
roughly the size of the entire country of Belgium.Â
A jolt of energy surged into Bulldog Stadium late in the
first half when Fresno State used their fight and determination to claw even with
the visiting Cincinnati Bearcats.

The game of football draws on emotions and heart. Ryan Colburn is now in his sixth year with
the Fresno State program and waited patiently for his chance to lead his
hometown team.

Tonight, he steadied the ship solidly during the first
half of play and tossed two late touchdowns with under two and half minutes
before the break. But it was the relentless
fire of the Bulldog defense that ignited the spark to show the nation the
essence of Bulldog football.

The Bulldogs kickoff the 2010 season with the first of seven
home games and welcome two-time defending Big East champion Cincinnati to
Bulldog Stadium on a hot September evening.

When tonight's kickoff is sent high into the Fresno sky,
it will be 7 p.m. here on the West Coast and 10 p.m. back in Ohio, the home
state of the visiting Bearcats. The
temperature is 30 degrees warmer here at Bulldog Stadium than it is in

As a university, Fresno State is also celebrating the
centennial academic year. Fresno State
Normal School was founded back in 1911 and over the past 100 years has become
the premier institution powering the New California. To honor the history of the institution, the
centennial logo is painted on the west and east sides of the 50-yard lines of
Jim Sweeney Field.

The 'Dogs traditional red and white checkerboard end
zones define the north and south ends of the green grass surface. The checkerboard design symbolizes Purina dog
food and the idea that Bulldogs want to spend their time in the end zones so
they can chow down.

This year's season opener will feature a variety of
in-game honors including the recognition of two former Bulldog student-athletes
(Paul George and Ryan Mathews) who were selected in the first round of the NBA
and NFL drafts at the end of the third quarter as well as a pregame ceremony
for all 2009-10 WAC championship teams and individuals.

Fresno State's Paul Ladwig, Associate Athletics Director of Marketing and Promotions, recently made a trip down to San Diego to see former Bulldog Ryan Mathews in his NFL debut and saw a couple other 'Dogs while he was there.
Three former Bulldog football players graced the field at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego during the 2010 NFL pre-season.
Quarterback Billy Volek, wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu, and running back Ryan Mathews are all former Bulldogs and are now competing for the San Diego Chargers at the professional level.
"They looked and carried themselves like professional NFL athletes when they took the field," said Ladwig. "You could see they were dialed in with an intense focus before the game."
 "Around the stadium I saw red #21 Fresno State jerseys and #24 Charger jerseys," said Ladwig. "Ryan Mathews is already making an impact on the team and the public. He has great potential to be an NFL superstar."
"He looked honored to be there as he was announced into Qualcomm Stadium. And besides Philip Rivers, Ryan received the biggest excitement from the fans," remembered Ladwig.
"Mathews exuded an attitude of appreciation towards the fans and enjoyed being there," Ladwig explained. "He played the first half, and the best play came on a carry when Ryan put his head down and plowed through a surprised Bear, Brian Urlacher."Â Â Â Â
He was humble and happy to be there and at the conclusion of the game you could see this as he waved goodbye to the fans," Ladwig remembered.
The proud moment for Paul Ladwig came seeing "all three Bulldogs, all Chargers, all on offense, and all in the game at the same time; I am positive that has never happened in an NFL huddle before."

Apparently it's not too soon to project which teams will be heading to bowl games at the end of the 2010 season.
With the start of the college football season this week two ESPN experts, Mark Schlabach and Andrea Adelson, made their bowl picks and both have the Dogs in postseason bowl games. The two reporters are on the opposite end of the bowl schedule spectrum, one predicting the Dogs will play in the first bowl game of the season and the other in the last non-BCS bowl game.
Schalbach predicts the Dogs will be in the New Mexico Bowl and will play Mountain West Conference opponent Wyoming on Dec. 18.
Adelson thinks the Dogs will be playing in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco on January 9, 2011 against Pac-10 opponent Oregon State. The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, in addition to a new corporate partner, has tied itself to the WAC and will feature a team from the WAC against a team from the Pac-10.
ESPN scheduled the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl the night before the BCS Championship game.
Of the two scenarios, Schalbach's seems least likely. It's doubtful that the New Mexico Bowl would like to have the same team three years running and even less likely they want a repeat match-up of bowl opponents from the 2009 game. While it was a very entertaining game and drew great television ratings, bowl games try to avoid rematches.
The Dogs have had great experiences in New Mexico the last two years and the fans there have welcomed the Dogs with open arms.
