Day One of Cal-Nevada Championships Crowns Four Champions

FRESNO, Calif. - The 2002 Cal-Nevada Championships, held at Fresno State's Warmerdam Field, finished the preliminary events today, Friday, March 29. For the men, UCLA has 28 points heading into the finals day. Nevada has a narrow lead over Fresno State's women with 18 points.
Two events were scored for both the men's and women's teams. For the men, the steeplechase and the hammer were scored, while the women scored the 3,000 meters and the steeplechase. The day began with the finals of the men's hammer. Arnaldo Cueto of Cal State Bakersfield was first with a throw of 207-4. In the men's steeplechase, Andrew Wulf of UCLA was the champion with a time of 9:08.79. On the women's side, Audrey Sung of UC San Diego won the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:06.27. And finally, Fresno State's Kara June was victorious in the steeplechase with a time of 11:05.27.
Finals begin tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with the women's hammer throw. The track events begin at 1 p.m. with the women's 5,000 meters.
