FRESNO, Calif. - The 2002 Cal-Nevada Championships concluded its two-day meet at Fresno State's Warmerdam Field on Saturday, March 30. UCLA won the team championship for the men with 204 points, while Cal State Northridge won the women's team championship with 129.50 points.
UCLA nearly doubled the score of the second place finisher, Fresno State, which earned 103. The Bruins finished the meet with 16 top three awards, including nine first place finishes. The men took first in the 110-hurdles, 400-hurdles, steeplechase, 4x400-relay, high jump, pole vault, shot put, and discus. Perhaps the best performance from the champion school came in both the pole vault and discus, two events in which it had four competitors in the finals. In the pit, the Bruins took first, second, fourth and fifth, while in the ring they captured first, second, fourth and sixth. Additionally, UCLA Bruins head coach Art Venegas was named Cal-Nevada Coach of the Year.
It was an opposite situation on the women's side. CS Northridge walked away with its first-ever championship at the meet. Although it was not for certain the outcome would be so. The first place finisher was determined by the 4x400-relay, the last event of the day. The top three women's teams, CS Northridge, Fresno State and San Diego State were all vying for the first place spot that would return a championship for their school. The Matadors won the event with a time of 3:38.68 and surpass Fresno State for the title. Fresno State finished second in the relay (3:38.81), while San Diego State was third (3:45.23). Northridge was also first in the 4x100 relay, the 400-hurdles, javelin and finished one-two in the 100-hurdles.
