Junior distance runner Annemarie Schwanz set a new school record in the 5000m last Friday at the Stanford Invitational. She clocked a time of 16:23.63, finishing second in her heat and first among all collegiate participants. The next closest collegiate competitor in her heat finished almost a full six seconds behind her record time. Schwanz's time eclipsed the old school record that has stood since 1984 when Renee Ortiz ran 16:26.4. Ortiz's mark stood for 31 years until Schwanz's record run up in Paol Alto, Calif. last weekend.
