FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State Department of Athletics will honor 236 student-athletes for their academic achievements at the annual Kiwanis Torch of Excellence Dinner on Monday, May 1, at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Fresno, Calif.
The dinner celebrates Fresno State student-athletes and their continued achievement in the classroom. The 236 honored at the dinner comprises 43 percent of the student-athlete population at Fresno State, a seven percent increase from last year and a 15 percent increase from 1998. Additionally, nearly 25 percent of FS student-athletes were on the Dean's List (3.5 GPA or better) at least once during the past year, and 107 are Western Athletic Conference Scholar-Athletes (3.2 GPA or better).
The softball, equestrian, swimming and diving, men's soccer, women's tennis and men's and women's track teams will all have over 50 percent of their squads honored. The women's tennis team is also in its fourth year of recognition by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as an all-academic team (3.5 GPA or above). Other teams recognized this fall by their respective national coaches associations as all-academic teams were men's (3.0 GPA) and women's (3.34 PGA) cross country. The swimming and diving team has also been nationally recognized for the fifth consecutive year by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America for their high ranking as a team with a cumulative grade point average above 3.0.
Scheduled to speak at the dinner are former Fresno State football player Payton Williams and softball player Amanda Scott.
Tickets for the dinner are $35 each or $300 for a table of 10. Tickets are available through local Kiwanis clubs or the office of Fresno State Athletics Academics Services. Call (559) 278-2963 for information.
