Bulldogs to Host Sixth Annual Kiwanis Torch of Excellence Dinner

FRESNO, Calif. - The Kiwanis Clubs of Fresno and Madera Counties, in conjunction with the Fresno State Athletic Department, will once again host the Sixth Annual Kiwanis Torch of Excellence Dinner, Monday, May 6, 2002.
The dinner will honor the 267 scholar-athletes of Fresno State at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Fresno. Unlike previous dinners, this year's event will feature a press conference, beginning at 5:00 p.m. The reception will follow at 5:30 p.m., with dinner to be served at 6:00 p.m.
"It is a great accomplishment to have 45 percent of our student-athletes honored this year, said Athletics Director, Scott Johnson. "On behalf of the athletic department I congratulate them for their hard work. I would also like to thank the Kiwanis Club for their continued support and joint recognition of the efforts of the student-athletes.
Fresno Mayor, Alan Autry, is presenting the opening remarks, while University President Dr. John D. Welty, Kiwanis District Governor, Greg Mason and Athletic Director, Scott Johnson will give the welcome. A total of 21 athletes will receive additional honors, including the Torchlighters Award, the George Ilg Memorial Award, WAC Stan Bates Nominees, Haak Scholarship recipients and the Dr. Thomas Thaxter Memorial Awards.
