Dogs Play Host to Mens Tennis NCAA Regional
Fresno State has been selected to host one of 16 regional qualifying tournaments for the 1999 NCAA Division I Mens Tennis Championships to be held Saturday-Sunday, May 15-16, at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The 25th-ranked Bulldogs (18-8) will be the second-seed in the four team regional. Fresno State will open the tournament against third-seeded and Western Athletic Conference rival UNLV (12-9). UNLV is ranked 43rd in the nation. USC, ranked 15th in the nation, will be the top-seed in the region. The Trojans (18-4) will take on the fourth-seed University of Missouri-Kansas City (14-4).
Both first round matches will take place on Saturday, May 15, with the championship match taking place on Sunday, May 16. Times for the matches will be released at a later date.
Fresno State hosted its only other NCAA regional tournament in 1995. The Bulldogs won the regional, defeating Boise State, 4-1, and New Mexico, 4-1, advancing to the NCAA Championships. This is the fifth-consecutive NCAA appearance for the Bulldogs.
Sophomore Peter Luczak and junior Olivier Le Jeune also received at-large bids into the 1999 NCAA Individual Championships on May 25-28, in Athens, Georgia.
Womens Tennis Team Headed to Regional
The 21st-ranked Fresno State womens tennis team will travel to the College of William and Mary in Virginia for the first and second rounds of the NCAA Championships beginning this Saturday, May 15 and continuing through Sunday, May 16.
The second-seeded Bulldogs (22-6) will face third-seed Harvard (11-11) in the first round. Harvard is ranked 47th in the national rankings.
This is the fourth-consecutive NCAA regional appearance for the Bulldogs.
Senior Dora Djilianova will make her fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Individual Championships beginning May 25 at the University of Florida.
