FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State will serve as the host institution for the Western Athletic Conference's annual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee next weekend, June 1-3. Kicking off the event with a President's reception at the Smittcamp Alumni House on Friday, June 1, 6:00 p.m., the WAC SAAC meeting will take place on campus at the Student Union (room 311).
Seventeen student-athletes representing all 10 WAC schools will commensurate on issues pertaining to student-athletes. In addition, they will join WAC Commissioner Karl Benson as guest speakers at Fresno's Boys and Girls Club on Saturday, June 2, 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. This community service project will not only serve as an educational tool but will give under-privileged children an opportunity to participate in athletic activities with the student-athletes.
"The purpose of this community project is to provide a positive experience for under-privileged children through athletics," WAC Commissioner Karl Benson said. "Participants will be able to interact with the student-athletes, and they will have the opportunity to learn basic fundamentals in a variety of sports like basketball, golf and track. It's also a chance for our student-athletes to give something back to the local community."
The WAC SAAC was founded on the grounds to establish a diversified proactive group of student-athletes communicating views or comments on WAC and NCAA rule governance and to help ensure academic and athletic excellence for all student-athletes in the conference.
The Fresno's Boys and Girls Club is located on 540 N. Augusta, on the northeast corner of Belmont and Augusta and one block east of Fresno Street, and sits next to Tehipite Middle School.
