Bakersfield's Acevedo Earns All-America Honors
Bulldog outfielder Anthony Acevedo (Bakersfield) received national accolades as he was named an Honorable Mention All-America selection by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Acevedo, a junior transfer from Bakersfield College, led the Bulldogs with a .389 batting average. His performance at the plate this year is the eighth-highest single-season batting average for a Bulldog.
Besides leading Fresno State in batting average, Acevedo was tops on the team with 64 runs, 89 hits, 23 doubles - tied for fifth on the single season list, five triples, 59 RBI and was second with six home runs.
Acevedo is the fourth Bulldog to receive All-America recognition from the NCBWA and picks up his seventh award of the season. Most recently, he was named to the All-West District second team. During the season he was named to the 1999 Pepsi-Johnny Quik Classic and Hawaii Rainbow Easter Tournament All-Tournament teams and was Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week March 15.
After the season ended, more awards came in for Acevedo who was named Team MVP at the annual Fresno State awards banquet and he was later honored with a first team All-WAC selection. Acevedo works as hard off the field as he does on the field as when he was named to the deans list last semester for having at least a 3.5 grade point average.
