U.S. Track & Field Trials
The 2000-2001 academic school year is just around the corner but some Fresno State Bulldogs have been keeping themselves busy this summer. Starting today in Sacramento, the U.S. Track and Field Trials will be an eight-day home stand that features 39 events at Hornet Stadium. The athletes must finish in the top three if they are to go to Sydney for the 2000 Olympic Summer Games. Beginning with the men's pole vault today, Fresno State will be represented by as many as six Bulldogs: pole vault--Jim Davis and Melissa Price, javelin: Nicole Carrol and Todd Reich, discus--Lacey Barnes, and 1500 meters--Jamey Harris. Trio of Olympians Hit the Court
Three Olympians, a professor and a local volleyball club coach will be the guest instructors for the 2000 Fresno State Volleyball Camps next week in the North Gym at Fresno State. 1992 Olympic Bronze medalists Ruth Lawanson (Fresno State) and Elaina Oden (Pacific) and Bev Oden (Stanford) will share their U.S. National Team experience and will be joined by Fresno State's men's club coach and professor of Biology Brian Tsukimura and Fresno State's assistant coach and Sports City volleyball club coach Ben Kubik. Five different camps are slated for next week, July 17-23: girl's and boy's (17th-20th), defensive (21st), hitter's (22nd), and setter's (23rd). Each athlete will be divided according to age, skill development and position. Amanda Scott Nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year
Fresno State's four-time NCAA First Team All-American in softball and U.S. National Team member has been honored as Fresno State's NCAA Woman of the Year. As a result, she is in the running for the NCAA Woman of the Year, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary. In honor and recognition of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership, Scott will be notified by August 14 if she is a state winner. In September, the 10 national finalists will be announced. The state award winners and the 10 finalists will be recognized and the 2000 NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced during a dinner on October 15 in Indianapolis, Ind. Scott joins two other Bulldog softball players who were the school's NCAA Woman of the Year in Laura Berg and Robyn Yorke. **********************************************************************************************
Bulldog Diamond Singled Out for Excellence
Handed out by the San Joaquin Chapter American Institute of Architects, Bulldog Diamond was bestowed the Award of Honor upon Edwin S. Darden Associates, Inc., for excellence in design and execution. Fresno State was the first university to build a major-league style stadium for its perennially nationally ranked softball team. **********************************************************************************************
U.S. Softball National Team Tour Stop
With the second half of the "Central Park to Sydney" tour kicking off tonight in Portland, Ore., the U.S. Softball Women's National Team will make Fresno, Calif., one of its 31-city tour stops on Sunday, July 23, 3:00 p.m. Making a three-city stop in California next week, the national team will take on the Women's Pro Softball League's Florida Wahoos at Bulldog Diamond. An autograph session will follow the single game, which will be broadcast tape delayed on ESPN2. Tickets can be purchased in person or over the phone by calling the Fresno State Bulldog Ticket Office at (559) 278-DOGS. Preceding the game will be the ASA 12-Under all-star game at 12:30 p.m. In addition, the USA Softball Women's National Team will conduct a clinic at Buchanan High School on Saturday, July 22 (details: 805-466-8505).
