FRESNO, Calif. - For the second consecutive year a Fresno State Athletics photographer will attend the prestigious Eddie Adams Workshop in Catskills, New York. Fresno State senior, Justin Kase Conder, will join 99 other participants in the annual workshop, Sept. 9-12, that helps young, aspiring photojournalists to share and learn new ideas with the nation's leading photographers and other students.
The workshop is in its 15th year and was founded by Eddie Adams, a former Marine, winner of a Pulitzer Prize and recipient of more than 500 international and national awards in his 40 years as a photojournalist. Adams began his career as the staff photographer of several local newspapers, including the Philadelphia Bulletin, and joined the Associated Press in 1961. His most notable and Pulitzer-winning coverage was in Vietnam, where he accompanied American and Vietnamese troops in 150 operations. He is the only three-time winner of the Sigma Delta Chi's Distinguished Service Award, and the George Polk Memorial Award. While known as a photojournalist, Adams' work also has encompassed corporate, editorial, fashion, entertainment and advertising photography. He has been a special correspondent for Parade Magazine for the past 20 years.
Last year, Fresno State Athletics photographer, David Hunter, attended the workshop in Barnstrom, which is a 40-acre farm in Catskills, New York. The focus and platform of the workshop will be changed this year. Rather than spending the entire session at the farm, the students will be assigned to shoot in New York City on Sept. 11, with the theme being "New York City: One Year Later."
The workshop is open to college students, professionals with three years or less experience and U.S. military photographers. The 100 students out of the thousands that apply are chosen by the Workshop Board of Directors base on their portfolios and recommendations.
Justin Kase Conder and David Hunter, who have been working at Fresno State for five and two years, respectively, have photographed sporting events nation-wide aside from Fresno State sports. Conder's photos have appeared in dozens of publications nation-wide, including People, Sports Illustrated, Newsweek and USA Today. Hunter's photos have also been published nation-wide, including publications such as USA Today, Sports Illustrated and ESPN the Magazine
