FRESNO, Calif. - All it took was one day, one moment in time.
Fresno State student-athletes and coaches were part of a community spirit that made an impact and revitalized the vivacity of Americans.
Walking the corners and medians of one of the busiest intersections in Fresno, the Bulldogs answered the call for volunteers by collecting monetary donations for the American Red Cross last Friday.
With local radio station, Alice 102.7 FM, working diligently on the air waves, countless individuals and businesses donating food and drinks, and immeasurable contributions made by volunteers at Lowe's parking lot for 13 hours straight, Fresnans responded with a generosity that could only be explained as heartfelt concern and patriotism.
It was an experience that these Bulldogs won't forget.
From collecting loose change in ashtrays to receiving a person's last $5 after being laid off from work to watching a $100 bill be placed in their hands to being speechless when a $700 check was handed out of a car window, that was what kept the 'Dogs wanting to meet the challenge laid out before them.
"What a tremendous response from our community," said Interim Athletics Director Scott Johnson. "I can't say enough about our student-athletes and coaches. How much they care about the Valley and how much the Valley cares about meeting a national need. We are very proud of the fact that the Athletics Department contributed in such a way to make a difference. There will still be a need in the months to come and I hope that the Valley will step to the forefront again."
The $100,000 collected on Friday, Sept. 14, is a preliminary figure as Alice 102.7 FM is still counting all the contributions made.
The American Red Cross is asking for monetary donations to support the New York City and Washington D.C. relief effort. Blood donations will be wanted in the next two to three weeks.
To make a contribution or find out how to help those in need, individuals may call the local American Red Cross at 455-1000 or visit the website at www.fresnomaderaredcross.org.
