FRESNO, Calif. - In the wake of last week's terrorist attacks, Fresno State Interim Athletics Director Scott Johnson has announced that Fresno State will implement several changes to increase security for fans and participants at all home sporting events.
The most notable change for fans will be security checks at the gates entering the venues, which will include the following:
- No backpacks, duffel bags, ice chests or large containers will be allowed.
- Purses and small handbags will be subject to search at the entrances.
- Thermoses are subject to search at the entrances.
- All cars entering the parking lots adjacent to the venues are subject to search.
- All vendors will be subject to search.
- Increased number of security and venue personnel.
- No pass outs will be given to allow reentry into the stadium, including halftime.
- Metal detectors will be available at the gates.
- For convenience, all gates will open two hours prior to football games.
"It's unfortunate that we have to impose such strict measures," said Johnson. "But the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans is paramount. We will not compromise anyone's safety. We have consulted with law enforcement agencies and other institutions to put the best plan in place to take every reasonable measure to ensure safety "
In addition, security on the Bulldog Stadium field will be tightened. Fans will no longer be allowed to enter the playing field at the conclusion of any game in the stadium. A portable fence is being installed along the inside walls of the stadium for football games. Fans must remain between the fence and the walls to get to and from their seats. The teams will be ushered up the ramp by university police officers after games. Fans will not be allowed on the ramp during that time. The fence cannot be installed for the soccer matches but fans will not be permitted on the field. Citations will be issued for non-compliance of these new regulations.
Johnson is urging fans to come to events early and to be patient during the process.
