Kara June, a freshman from Santa Maria, Calif., and the 2001 WAC champion in the 3000-meter steeplechase, was quite busy this summer. In June, she competed at the United States Track and Field Junior Nationals. It was at this meet that she set a world junior record, an American junior record, and a junior meet record. Kara clocked first place with a time of 6:51.43 in the women's 2,000-meter steeplechase exhibition event. And along with her title, Kara also earned Verizon Junior All-American status and will represent Team USA at the Pan American Junior Championships in October. Kara is considered a pioneer in the Women's 3000-meter steeplechase, which made its debut as a NCAA sanctioned event in the 2001 outdoor track season.
