FRESNO, Calif. - Being in the background is where a lot of good support personnel work, and, when one of the good guys are recognized for unending hours of work, the good guy does come out on top for tremendous service.
Such is the case for Fresno State's head strength and conditioning coach Ed Nordenschild, who was awarded the inaugural Coach Practitioner Award by The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) this afternoon.
One of 18 singled out world wide and one of six NCAA Division I coaches honored, Nordenschild was chosen based on achievements, competency, assessment of practical/applied experience, interest in, and contribution to, the profession of strength and conditioning.
Nordenschild, who is in his fifth year at Fresno State, has coached five NSCA All-Americans, including David Carr, the NFL's No. 1 draft pick in 2002.
"It's a tremendous honor but working with these student-athletes, across the board, makes my job easy," said Nordenschild, who oversees the weight room, its personnel and the strength and conditioning programs of the Bulldogs' 10 women sports, men's basketball and baseball. "I work with great people. It means a lot to be part of this (NSCA) program from the ground level."
"We are very proud of Ed and all of his hard work with our student-athletes," Fresno State Director of Athletics Scott Johnson said. "It's nice to know that the National Strength and Conditioning Association recognizes what we have know for a long time, that we have one of the best coaches in the nation."
This is the first year in which the NSCA has implemented the Coach Practitioner Program.
