The Western Athletic Conference entered a new era in 1996, becoming the nation's largest NCAA Division I-A conference. With the addition of UNLV, Rice, San Jose State, SMU, TCU and Tulsa, WAC membership now stands at 16 institutions.
Beginning with the 1996 season, the WAC adopted a divisional format for scheduling in which quadrants are utilized to form two eight-team divisions (Pacific and Mountain) in the four primary team sports. The quadrants rotate every year in men's and women's basketball and volleyball, and every other year in football, in order to promote a full-conference concept. This season, quadrants will rotate as quads 3 and 4 will form the Pacific Division, and 1 and 2 will make the Mountain Division. Eight conference games will be played by each school in each division (its seven division opponents, plus one crossover game from the opposite division).
