Head Coach Jeff Tedford
On quarterback change…
“Marcus needed some time to get the offense down. There are a lot of moving parts to our offense and a lot of things that we do that is a lot more than just throwing the football. There are a lot of things you need to control with motions and certain run-pass options, and things like that. He has done a really good job in studying. He has a live arm and can make some plays. We felt that, with his progress, he put himself in a position to get an opportunity to see what he can do. He did a good job.”
On Marcus McMaryion’s handling his different situations tonight…
“There was a lot of hype surrounding him tonight. It would be easy for a guy to think ‘I have to really shine here and live up to everybody’s expectations’, when he really just needs to do his job. He just has to play within himself and not force the football. Like I told him earlier today, ‘you don’t have to be Superman, just go through your progressions and make your reads’. He was accurate in throwing the football. When Marcus throws it, he is going to throw it with authority and he is going to throw it on time. If he plays within the offense and does his job, he will be just fine.”
On outside comments on Marcus McMaryion starting at quarterback…
“I don’t pay attention to that. I am aware of it, but it has nothing to do with our decision. We have decisions to make in here. We are the ones who know what the progress is and how people are doing. Our decision to start Marcus had nothing to do with what was coming from outside. It was all about what we do day-to-day in here. We felt like he was way behind when he got here, he didn’t have spring or summer ball with us, but he has been working really hard since he got here. He wasn’t perfect tonight by any means; we are going to watch some film and work on some things. With his experience, we don’t have to worry about him having to catch up with the speed of the game. When you are playing quarterback, the speed of the game is pretty quick, but he has played in a big arena before and at a high level so he did not have to make that adjustment. The speed of the game makes a big difference, but that is not something he needed to adjust to.”
On Marcus McMaryion’s player skills…
“He is smart, he is a good leader, he plays with confidence and he can run. All around, he did a decent job tonight but we have to get a lot better in all areas. I feel like the bye week came at a good time so he could get more reps and gain some confidence. The more he gets those starting reps, the more confidence he will gain.”
On Jaron Bryant’s performance tonight…
“He did a nice job. I thought he did a great job on his second interception on breaking down the ball and going to the high point and keeping his feet in bounds. It is very competitive everyday on our field. We have some depth to corner so we can rotate those guys in and out. Tonight was his turn and he did a good job.”
On the team’s confidence after this win…
“This is this years team, it has nothing to do with the past or anything like that. They have put in the work and the effort to get where they are. It is one win. We need to get a lot better. We have a long way to go.”
Head Coach Jeff Tedford on how he feels about letting the defense work a little bit…
“No I am not happy about it. I wish we had been able to perform in those offensive situations. No matter what we would have done, there is always learning points. We will continue to grind with that. A win is great, and the guys will feel great tonight, but tomorrow we will get back to reality about what we need to do better and that’s what we will coach next week. We will coach, and we will grind and we will keep holding them to a high standard. I thought they tackled well tonight, I thought we had too many penalties tonight and we just didn’t play well enough overall. We will not let off the gas by any means.”
Head Coach Jeff Tedford on being happy after the win…
“I am satisfied for tonight. Like I said, it is one game. I am happy for the team because they worked really hard. We practice really hard every day and we hold them to a high standard. I think this validates that if we do things how we practice, it will pay off. If anything, the validation of that is what makes me most happy.”
Marcus McMaryion, QB
About starting the game…
“Coach Tedford didn’t make it official until later on in the week, but we were splitting reps and I had a good feeling that hopefully it would come if I was performing well in practice.”
On what was making him comfortable to make the plays…
“Nevada has a great defense, they did a good job. Coach Tedford and Coach Debor were telling me not to be too aggressive and just take what the defense was giving me, so it was getting the ball out quick to the running back and start making plays from it.”
On what he learned in his career by working with what the defense gives you…
“I think a younger Marcus would see one on one coverages and try to drive the ball no matter if there are guys on me. It definitely comes with experience, good coaching and making sure I’m not overly aggressive.
On the best memory from today…
“I didn’t have to do too much, I didn’t have to go out of my comfort zone and try to be a playmaker and do too much. I was just out there and the guys were making plays for me and I was just playing within the offense and I didn’t have to do too much.”
“I was just really proud of all the skill guys and the offensive line, they are doing a great job upfront keeping me upright, credit to all those guys.”
On having support from people from Dinuba…
“It was great. As soon as I got here I knew I had people, old coaches, old teammates and old friends saying that they bought their season tickets as soon as they heard the news. It’s great to know that you have that kind of support from the town and high school. A lot of them weren’t able to make it out to Oregon State and I couldn’t have picked a better place coming home and Fresno State.”
On feeling comfortable right at kickoff…
“Before any game, whether I had six career starts or my first one tonight I feel like you are always going to be nervous before a game. If you care you are going to be nervous.”
On being a valley representative…
“It is great, it definitely comes with a lot of pride behind it. Valley pride it a big thing around here so just to have the support from not only my teammates, but the community support it only pushes me that much more to continue to strive to get better each and every day.”
On what he did at practice that led to him getting to start…
“Learning the ins and outs of the offense. I am grateful that Tedford is patient with me to have hiccups in practice and not get on me too much, just really coach me up instead of turning the other way and working with me. He allowed me to learn the offense and come along as I was going at my own pace.”
Keesan Johnson, WR
On the offense under Marcus McMaryion….
“Coach made a change and it seemed to work out in the right way, so we will keep rolling with our quarterback change. I liked the way our offense was rolling tonight, so hopefully we will stay on that path.”
On catching passes from Josh Hokit….
“I think anyone would ask for a pass from Josh Hokit. He’s 100 percent, so I think anyone on my team will.”
On first touchdown reception of the season…
“We practice the 50-50 ball during practice and I always tell the quarterbacks to have faith in me the same way I have faith in you.”
On the feeling of winning….
“It’s been a long ride. Today feels like a great win. It’s a great team win and everyone felt good about it but the season goes on. We have to come back tomorrow and watch film, beat the little mistakes and keep it going.”
George Helmuth, LB
On the change in quarterback….
“We have confidence in both Marcus and Chason, so whatever decision Coach Tedford makes, we’re going to go with it and have confidence in that guy. Marcus did a good job tonight.”
On the defense in the first half….
“We were definitely frustrated. When you play good defense, you want the scoreboard to reflect that. When you give up two touchdowns late, you don’t feel like you played a great half.”
On the defense…
“I’m not going to go into our scheme or anything, but the look they gave us, I’m the guy at the post. I’m not going to cover a wide receiver.”
“We definitely felt fresh tonight, we got a lot of three-and-outs. On-and-off the field, definitely not fatigued or anything like that.”
On tonight’s win…
“Great win, first conference game. First of many, so definitely a confidence booster. We haven’t beaten a Division I school in 600-something days. It feels nice to win.”
“Football is so much more fun when you’re winning. Everything goes by easier. When you’re losing like we were, that’s tough.”
NEVADA Quotes
Head Coach Jay Norvell
On tonight’s game…
“I was disappointed. I was especially disappointed in our pass defense. We have to eliminate the turnovers, we can’t give ourselves a chance to win unless we eliminate the turnovers. We have to have more guys make plays for us, it’s that simple. We have to find a way to play.”
On the offense…
“I’m disappointed in our offense. There were a lot of third and shorts that could have allowed us to get back in the game that we didn’t convert. We have to convert on third downs. We need to do a better job collectively as an offense. We had a few injuries that hurt us and we’ll have to manage that going forward.”
“I don’t think there is one thing in particular that’s holding back our offense. We have to play more consistent on the perimeter. Our quarterbacks need to make more plays. Overall, everyone needs to do better. We have to find a way to get things fixed and change our course. We need to find a way to get Ty (Gangi) more opportunities.”
“We have the potential to play better offensively, we just need to get out to a faster start. We need to play better offense from the start of the game and play better offense from the start so we don’t get behind at the start of the game. We haven’t lost faith that we can play well, but we need to make some adjustments.”
On the position of quarterback…
“I think we stick with Ty (Gangi). We’ll look at the film and we’ll see what we need to do to limit turnovers. We have a lot of young receivers and it’s going to take some time to look like the football team we want to look like. We’ll the make the changes that we need to.”
On starting Mountain West play…
“I’m surprised we didn’t play better tonight. I thought we could have played better defense from the start. I thought we had the opportunity to attack on offense and strike from the beginning. We have to make our players accountable, and we should see that accountability on Saturday.”
Wyatt Demps, WR
On the game…
“Fresno State is a good team. They played really hard tonight. We tried our best, but they came out on top. We have some stuff to work on. We’ll keep working on them as a team, as a family and things will get better.”
“We need to calm down on offense and play together. As we start playing together plays will connect, and things will start falling for us.”
“We are still a good team. As we work harder, we’ll play better. There isn’t any frustration. We are staying positive and giving our all every day.”
Ty Gangi, QB
On the game…
“I’m disappointed. I wish we could of came out and won our first conference game, but we just have to move on. We are trying to keep our heads up and focus on next week.”
“Our biggest problem on offense is our lack of consistency. We show spurts of what we can do, but we need to be consistent in it. We need to continue to keep working and take more reps. Once we put it all together we are going to be something special.”
“I wouldn’t say I was surprised in the outcome of tonight’s game. We knew Fresno State was a good team going into the game. We knew we were going to have to play our game and we didn’t do that tonight.”
Austin Corbett, OL
On the game…
“It’s hard to find words. We felt good going into the game and we had really good practices, but it didn’t translate. I’m looking at myself as a leader and thinking about what I need to do to get them ready for these games. We have to rotate players until we find players who are going to do their jobs. We need to make sure guys are leaving everything they have out on the field, and that starts tomorrow. It’s going to be a long bus ride home.”
“I’m not surprised about the way Fresno State played at all. We knew we were going to walk into a dog fight. I think some of our guys took this game lightly. We came into a hostile environment. Fresno has a community that does a great job supporting their team. They are going through changes in with their program and the community is backing them even more. It got loud in the stadium on third downs. We have to understand what we are going into every night, because this is the Mountain West.”
