Fresno State-San Jose State Postgame Quotes
October 7, 2017
Head Coach Jeff Tedford
On the win …
“It’s a good win. It’s always nice to come away with a victory. We can get a lot better, but it’s great to bring the trophy home. That’s something we talked all week about, and we take pride in that. History will record the 2017 team in this rivalry. The guys found a way to win, which is something that we probably needed, to stumble a little bit and wake up because we didn’t play very well on offense in the second half.”
On winning without the offense playing its best in the second half…
“We lost momentum, we lost field position in the third quarter but nobody really panicked, everybody hung in there. Defense played well, special teams played well, we punted the ball well and switched the field a bit, made a mistake of catching the ball on the 6-yard line, that’s a young mistake that we can improve with. But there’s a lot of lessons to be learned, but the team hung in there and didn’t panic and kept playing.”
On what opportunity the San Jose State run defense presented the Fresno State run game…
“We just needed to get the run game going. I felt like if we could get it going a little bit, wear them down, and it would pay off later in the game. They did a good job though, they really did. Ronnie ran the ball well, but we put ourselves behind the sticks way too much. I need to look at the film and see about those penalties, we can’t do that. You go behind schedule, and have long-yard situations, it’s hard against anybody to convert.”
On penalties effecting the team on third downs …
“When you go backwards, it’s hard to convert. Then we had some dropped balls, there’s lot things we can improve with and like I said, it may sound weird, but it’s something we needed to tighten up and make sure we’re making plays in tight games. When you play tight games, you can’t win like that. You can’t rely on the defense all game long.”
On what might have been missing from McMaryion’s game on Saturday …
“He was off a little bit. That’s an unconventional defense. They have good blitz packages. But we missed on some balls that we should have hit for sure. Again, it’s a work in progress for him. Each week it’s different. We’ll go back to the drawing board and see what we could have done better and I’m sure he’ll learn from it.”
On the team moving forward …
“It’s one week at a time. We’ll never look past one week. We have a tough opponent next week in New Mexico and an unconventional offense. It’s hard to simulate in practice.”
On Ronnie Rivers …
“I thought he ran hard. Those were tough yards. He was out in space a lot, didn’t have a lot of open space. I thought he ran with his pads down and secured the football, didn’t turn it over, that was a good game for him to get in between the tackles and run with some authority.”
