Fresno State-UNLV Postgame Quotes
Fresno State vs. UNLV
Nov. 3, 2018
Las Vegas, Nev.
Head Coach Jeff Tedford
On the game…
“I'm really proud of our staff and our team. Last year, they came to our place and they played well and we didn’t. We needed to make that right this year. I thought our guys had a good week of preparation, and came out tonight really focused.”
On how emotions were managed this week...
“I wanted the emotional aspect to take over. I wanted to make sure that we knew what that was about. There was a lot of op-Ed in our meeting last night about making it right, believing in ourselves and proving what Bulldog football is about. I’m really happy the guys focused this week.”
On playing without Jeff Allison...
“I thought they did a good job. Mosby came in at one of the linebacker positions and we shifted George (Helmuth) in and moved over James (Bailey). It was a team effort, the defense rallied, played really well. That was an explosive group with a lot of speed and they flew around and did a nice job.”
Going back to Boise...
“They’re a great program and a great team. It’s going to be a struggle. It’s going to be a short week and so we’re going to have to get back, get healthy, and get into the game plan right away. Our guys know what that is all about. We know what we’re up against with them, they’re a class team and we’re going to have to play our best.”
George Helmuth, Sr., LB
On the game and if last year’s result was motivation…
“Coach Tedford talked to us about how both teams were in the same situation as we were last season when they beat us. We definitely weren’t going to let them catch us twice so we prepared hard all week. They have a good run game and an athletic quarterback so we took practice seriously this week.”
On if being ranked puts more pressure on them…
“I think that we have high standards for ourselves. Especially the defense, we take pride in holding opponents to low points and total yardage. We put that pressure on ourselves, it doesn’t have anything to do with rankings.”
On holding UNLV to a field goal…
“We don’t like other teams to score touchdowns on us, so we take pride in holding them to a field goal.”
On how they prepared for this game…
“We watched a lot of films to see where they like to attack and what our weaknesses are. Especially with the counters, they had a lot of that. We expected that from them. It’s all about preparation and we are taking it one week at a time.”
On next week’s game against Boise State…
“We are really excited to play Boise State. They are a good football team. We’ve been looking forward to this game all year. We have a short week with the game on Friday, but we have to have a good week. It’ll be a faster week than we are used to, so as soon as we get home we’ll turn our attention to Bose State.”
Logan Hughes, Sr., OL
On the motivation behind the game…
“We wanted to get them back for the last two years, but at the same time we didn’t want to think about the past. We wanted to come out and play our best. I think we handled this game well and we respected our opponent.”
On players getting in the game during the fourth quarter…
“I think it’s awesome. I love seeing as many people play as possible, because I was there not too long ago. I loved getting in the game when I could. It is a great feeling to share the wealth in games like this.”
On being ranked…
“I think Coach Tedford says it best. The rankings only matter at the end of the season, that’s when we will look at them. The rankings don’t really matter right now.”
On getting to play in his hometown…
“This game means the world to me. I got to come home and play in front of my family. My family brought about 40-50 people tonight. It’s a really special feeling, I can’t even put it into words.”
On starting the game…
“You just go one day at a time and work as hard as you can to get better as a player, no matter what your role is. I think that is why our team works. No matter what our role on the team is, we work hard and we’re ready for when we are called up. Next man up.”
James Bailey, Sr., LB
On the game against UNLV...
"We didn't treat this game like a trap game. We treated it like a championship game. We slipped up last year when we played this game. If we would of beat UNLV in 2017 then we would of hosted the Mountain West Championship game at home. We treat every week like a championship week, this week happened to be against UNLV."
"What happened last year was motivation for us, We beat San Diego State and we were feeling really good so we overlooked UNLV. We had a bad week of practice because we weren't worried about it, This year, we took it really personally. We wanted make sure we stayed true to our mentality 'grind, refine and repeat. We were focused on UNLV week and nothing else."
On players getting in the game during the fourth quarter…
"It's really fun. It's good to see the younger guys go in an compete and make plays. It's awesome to see them get in the game and get those reps. We cheer for them no matter what. I was so happy we stopped them on that last drive and didn't allow them to score a touchdown."
On being ranked...
I'm not worried about what our ranking is. We can be #25 or #1, it doesn't matter to us. That's just a number. We have to keep competing, no matter who we play."
On playing Boise State...
"It's Boise week now and we have to treat it like a championship. We have to go our on Monday and grind, refine and compete. Last year hurt, we felt like we should of hosted that championship game. It was rough. but we just have to make sure we are prepared this time.
