Fresno State-Wyoming Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Kalen DeBoer
On the game…
“I’m proud of our guys. I think we beat Wyoming at their own game. We took care of the football and got the turnovers. There are still a lot of things we can get better at, but I am excited that we are finding different ways to win. I think that’s a sign of a great football team. You have to find different ways to win. Whether it is offensive or defensive. Whether it’s a shutout, the run game, the pass game. There’s things that we got better at today that will carry over. I can’t wait to watch the film to see exactly what we did. I’m just proud of the guys for finding a way to win.”
Evan Williams, S, Jr.
On having two interceptions and leading the team in tackles…
“I’m ecstatic. We’ve put so much time into this game and putting this defense together. When you see that hard work come together, it feels great.”
On the defense…
“We knew this game was going to be a dog fight. We were ready for a battle. Wyoming has a good defense. Our defense came into this game that it has to be us. We had a sour taste in our mouthes from two weeks ago. We knew this had to be our game. I’m proud of all the guys for getting after it. I love to see that goose egg up on the scoreboard after the game.”
On why they were able to get five turnovers…
“We were just doing our jobs individually. We needed to stop the run, shoutout to the defensive line for getting that done. We put pressure up front. Wyoming couldn’t get anything in the run game so they had to resort to the pass game. Our DBs were ready for it. We came to make. plays. I love seeing everyone get a piece of the action.”
On Sean Chambers…
“He’s a great athlete. We knew he was going to try to make plays with his feet. He’s really good at improvising. We were just trying to stop the run. He got out and made a couple plays with his feet, but we did what we needed to do to keep him contained. We forced him to make some throws that he wasn’t comfortable making and we capitalized.”
On Wyoming pulling out their starting quarterback…
“They threw everything at us and we had all the answers. It feels great to know that we have that kind of power. When we are playing at our best, we can operate at the highest level. It was a big confidence booster going into the next week.”
Kevin Atkins, DT, Sr.
On the game…
“We knew that the game was going to come down to who was going to be the more physical team. We knew they were going to run the ball and we needed to rise to the occasion to stop the run.”
On this game compared to the 2017 game…
“The 2017 game here was really close. It was different circumstances because we needed that game to clinch the West Division to go to the championship. The two games were similar, some of their players came back so it was almost a replay of 2017.”
On the four interceptions…
“The interceptions gave us extra motivation. We know that we have good DBs and linebackers that can go out and make plays. We harped on putting the pressure on their offense all week. They did that, and came up with big plays.”
On stopping the run…
“We showed that we are ready for any team that we come across. We’ve shown that we can play the physical game and we can play the spread game. We can handle whatever is thrown at us.”
On Evan Williams…
“I’m really excited for him. He has come such a long way. I’ve watched him develop since his freshman year and he’s a completely different player. He’s a great player for us to have back there. I love having him behind me.”
Jake Haener, QB, Sr.
On the game…
“A win is a win. I think the guys did a really good job. The pass game wasn’t there. I relied on the offensive line to get the job done. They came up big and got us a win.”
On the interceptions and fumble…
“The turnover margin is huge. Most of the time, that margin determines the game. They guys did a heck of a job on defense getting the ball back to us. They gave us great field position and then we punched the ball in when we could.”
On the run game…
“We wanted to establish the run game. They gave us some favorable looks to do so. We did a goof job of establishing the run game and trying to get the pass game going when we could. Every day is different. We just have to do what it takes win and today that was the run game.”
On Jordan Mims…
“It was great to see Jordan getting the run game going and fighting for those extra yards. It inspired a lot of guys on the sideline and took some of the pressure off Ronnie Rivers. The one-two-punch was great for us today. When we have both of them going, it makes us two dimensional. It also opens up lanes for the pass game. I was happy for the guys to get a lot of carries and put this win on their shoulders. I’m proud of them.”
