Fresno State-San Diego State Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Kalen DeBoer
On the game...
“This was a huge team win for us. The defense did a great job all game long by consistently shutting down the run. We brought a lot of physicality from the start which set the tone. We had some timely turnovers that our offense was able to finish off for some points. We knew this was going to be a grind, especially with how good SDSU’s special teams unit is. It was a hard-fought battle tonight. We faced a really good football team tonight. We came out strong. I thought we played one of our better first quarters that we’ve had. We had a really good mindset this week. The guys are coming out to practice ready, trusting in the game plan, believing in each other and believing in the coaches. That’s what you saw out there on the field today.”
“We were able to take away their strength of running the football, and we were able to establish the run game. They like to put you in third and long situations. Jake did a great job of managing the downs. Our offensive line consistently did their job against some really great players on their defensive line. SDSU has a great defensive scheme, but our guys did a great job executing what we needed to do against them.”
Jake Haener, Sr., QB
On the win…
“It was a good game. We have a lot of great players on our team that play really hard. We love to fight and compete. I couldn’t be happier about the outcome tonight.”
“I think we played complete football. We played team football. Our guys did a great job of competing out there and staying on the field when we needed to. I could have given the guys a couple more chances to make plays in the red zone, but overall we continued to fight.”
Jordan Mims, Sr., RB
On the game…
“We knew this was a big game and we needed to get a win. We knew SDSU was a great team. I think all three sides of the ball did their jobs tonight and we got the win because of it. Their defense throws a lot at you and we knew it was going to be tough yards earned. We were prepared for that.”
On the game and stopping the run...
“We knew this was going to be a physical game and they were going to try to pound the ball. We knew the front seven were going to have to get in there and be physical. Our game plan was to stop the run and make them rely on the pass game. We executed our game plan and took them out of their comfort zone. We played as one whole unit. When you focus on the little things, the big things take care of themselves.”
On bringing the Old Oil Can back to Fresno…
“This is my last year and I would love to go out with every trophy possible and bring them back to Fresno. I’m from San Diego, so this was a big hometown win for me. I might be San Diego born, but I’m Fresno made.”
