Quotes: Fresno State at No. 11 Oregon
Head Coach Kalen DeBoer
On the team…
The biggest takeaway after leaving the locker room right now, is that we have a team that has each other's backs. They feel like they can play with anyone. They are hurting right now because they know they have a chance. I have a team that will come out next week with a lot of fire. I can tell you that. I am extremely confident that tomorrow is going to be one of the greatest film sessions. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday are going to be an amazing week of practice."
On the change from the first to the second quarter…
"We just started executing better. The two turnovers in the first quarter hurt us. We talk about weathering the storm, especially when you go into a hostile environment, and the storm hit is pretty hard in the first quarter. We weathered it. When you get so far behind, it takes a lot of plays to catch up and take the lead. When you are playing a good football team, they'll eventually make some plays too."
On Jake Haener…
"He got blindsided in the first quarter, causing that fumble. The second fumble was disappointing. We just have to take care of the football. Besides that, he kept his cool the entire game. He was close to 70 percent. That's what you're looking for when you're in a hostile environment. He kept battling, fighting and kept finding open players. The noise caused some false starts, but we kept fighting."
On the defense…
"I'm excited about how physical we were and how we were able to limit the amount of explosive plays. They got two, but we continued to line up with the ball. We never looked overwhelmed, we lined up right and we were physical. We are becoming stingy. We have a one yard is too many mindset and they are developing more confidence."
On Abraham Montano…
"He did a great job today in a clutch situation. I was really proud of the way he kicked the ball today."
On the crowd noise...
"It makes communication hard. You have to do a silent count and that caused some false starts for us. We had ourselves in good postions to make some plays, but then had a false start. Those type of mistakes change the play call and can change the outcome."
Tyson Maeva, Sr., LB
On coming back from a 14-point deficit…
"The heart of the team isn't the problem. We're going to fight the whole night or the whole day. At the end of the day, they made just one more play than we did you know so heart isn't the problem. We just have to execute and make plays."
On the defense after the two touchdowns scored off turnovers…
"We can't we can't not talking about those two touchdowns when we're backed up. When there is a sudden change in a game, it's a big thing. The offense gives up the ball sometimes. We can't be perfect. As the defense, we need to have their backs and execute when we have our backs against the wall. Overall, we just didn't get it done. That doesn't mean we weren't fighting. It doesn't matter where the ball is at, we have to understand the situation and do whatever we can help out our offense."
On the defense after the first quarter…
"We started slow. If we didn't give up those two touchdowns to start the game, that might have been the game. We have to start a lot faster I understand our responsibilities. We were able to wake up and do what we needed to do to keep them out of the end zone, but we didn't execute when we needed to."
On Autzen being a loud stadium…
"We knew the stadium was going to be loud, and the fans were going to be crazy. The defense is the silencer on the road. The crowd doesn't have a reason to be loud when we are making their offense go three-and-out."
On how to stop the run game…
"We need to stay on our gaps and keep our techniques sound. We were pretty solid during the first half, but they made their adjustments at the half. We need to keep our technique sound. We weren't making contact at the line and we were letting them fall forward for extra yards. Consistency going to be a big emphasis for me going forward while I lead these guys. We have a great defense, but we need to be consistent for this team to make a run."
