Fresno State-UC Santa Barbara Postgame Quotes
Justin Hutson, Fresno State Head Coach
On the reasons for the turnovers…
"Eleven turnovers isn’t too bad. You know, we strive for nine. We come into the game and say we want to have nine, so eleven isn’t too bad, but you know if they come in the wrong times they're bad. We strive for nine so 11 is not too bad for a team with seven new guys."
On shot selection...
"I thought we generated pretty good shots to get open shots and didn't make them. Now you always say go back and watch the film, but I know for sure we missed six point blank layups in the first half. Eduardo (Andre) missed two, X (Xavier DuSell) missed one, Leo (Colimerio) missed one, Enoch (Boakye) missed one and you’re sitting right there underneath the basket. That's 12 points and those weren't hard and I thought we generated pretty good open looks in the second half, you know. Dono (Donovan Yap Jr.) took a couple quick ones on the break but he's been shooting them well so you'll go back and look at the film and see if he had a drive that he could have taken because we had four on threes and stuff, but he was wide open and that's what we do. I thought every one of X’s shots were good. We had to force a couple because we got to the end of the clock, but we got to make them, we've got to generate good ones and make them."
On Enoch’s high number of rebounds…
"He rebounded the ball well, on both ends of the floor. I thought he did a pretty good job rebounding the ball and that's going to help us you know if we can get him to finish it inside. He had one monster finish and he had another three times where he probably should have got it done or a kick out, so we’ve got to turn that into production. You get that extra possession, we need to go ahead and finish inside or kick it out, get some production on getting that extra possession."
On being patient with the new guys but still building confidence with wins…
"Well, it's about playing the right way. It's not juggling being patient, I'm not sacrificing wins trying to be patient and I'm also not going to not be patient so we don't win. It's more of just playing the guys that deserve to play and you're continuing to get information on what guys do in the game setting. Kind of like, you rebounded the ball, okay now can we use that as positive; we're supposed to come protect the rim, how can we use that as a positive and quit fouling. Were they good shots? If they were good shots, hey I’ve got confidence in you so keep shooting them because we’ve seen you make them. If they weren’t good shots then we’ve got to address that. Yes, we want to win every game, but you’re also just playing the best people that deserve to play to give them the best chance."
On interior being more crowded when the three’s aren’t falling…
"I thought we got to the rim a few times late in the game. Pope (Isaiah Pope) finished a couple right. We're trying to get to the rim, but if you're going to help, we're going to kick it out. We've got some capable shooters, we just didn't make them tonight."
On Pope’s role so far …
Leadership, maturity, a certain level of toughness, physicality, and making the right play. It just didn't go in, but I thought he made the right play. We kept generating shots, they just weren't going in. We'll go back and look at that, now, I wouldn't say every shot we took was good, but I saw a lot of leadership and maturity and playing with a nice feel out there tonight. So I have to go back and watch the film and see because he did miss a lot of shots.
Donovan Yap Jr., Guard, Senior
On what was talked about post-game…
"You know, we came out pretty strong, Coach just felt like we let go of the rope the last four minutes and stopped being connected. We didn't get enough stops to win the game."
On the push for more threes…
"We were just taking what was open for us, there wasn't an emphasis or anything like that, we just felt like that was the right play out there so we just kept taking them."
On the focus on threes in practice…
"I feel like we work a lot on our threes in practice and guys are putting in extra work, but sometimes the shots just aren't going to fall for us and that's part of the beauty of the game. Tonight we couldn't get all of them to fall, so it hurts a little bit."
On how to move forward from this game…
"They were doing a pretty good job stopping our drives, allowing us to shoot the three. We were open to shoot it but we just couldn't knock it down. They did do a pretty good job of clogging the paint, stunning the guys when they were driving and then clearing out."
On Eduardo Andre’s foul trouble and the impact on the game…
"I feel like it for sure made a difference obviously we could have used him out there but I feel like you know that's just the beauty of the game. That's something that's out of our control, but we definitely could have used him."
On where the team is at currently and the confidence going forward…
"You know, our guys are willing to win, we’re willing to sacrifice to do the things needed to win. We know that there’s still work to be done so we go in and practice just everyday with the mentality that we have to get better. We're not satisfied, you know. We watch film heavily and we make sure we're bringing intensity and effort every day and practice so we can turn it around."
On having BYU next …
"You know it hurts that we lost tonight, but we’ve just got to flush it as fast as possible and turn around. Practice tomorrow, watch film on this, and see what we could have done better. and just prepare for the next game, but we just got to flush this for the next game. We can’t hold on or dwell on it."
