Fresno State-Arizona State Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Jeff Tedford
On the win…
“I’m proud of the guys for keeping them out of the end zone and all of the turnovers that we forced. I thought the defense played excellent. They put pressure on the passer, they were ballhawks and caused fumbles. I am proud of them.”
“Every week there are things to get better at. Our red zone offense isn’t as good as it needs to be. We need to score touchdowns instead of field goals. I thought Dylan Lynch did a good job tonight, but we need to score touchdowns. That’s what these early games in the season are all about, learning and making mistakes. Thankfully we won the game. I’m proud of our team for going on the road, focusing on what needed to get done and executing.”
On the win streak…
“The program has a 12-game win record, but this team is 3-0. This is a new team. We have to blaze our own trail. We are responsible for that. I thought the guys responded really well this week in practice and came out fired up and ready to play tonight.”
On the Red Wave…
“It was great. There’s nothing like then looking up in the stands at the end of game and having more fans than they do. That’s really cool of our fans that traveled to be here for us. We travel well. I’m just happy they got to see a good game.”
Mikey Keene, R-So., QB
On the win and coming home to Arizona...
"It was a surreal moment to come home and have a lot of people watch me play that haven't seen me play since high school. When I was playing in Florida, a lot of people didn't have the opportunity to see me play so that was special for me. I knew I needed to go in with my preparation to stay cool, calm and collected. I couldn't let the outside stuff get to me throughout the game-planning and throughout the game. We did a great job tonight, but my mind goes straight to where we didn't finish in the red zone. We left a lot of points out there, it should have been an even bigger win tonight. Ultimately, defense did a great job tonight with all those turnovers. We have to be better as an offense and finish those turnovers off for them. It's hard to lose when your defense gets that many turnovers. They got the shutout. It was an awesome performance by them."
"I just need to do my job every game to my fullest potential to help us get a win. It doesn't matter to me how many yards or touchdowns that I get, as long as we get the win and I'm doing my job, that's what matters to me. We had an ugly win last week, but an ugly win is better than a pretty loss. It's great to be able to 3-0 at this point in the season, but there's a lot more season to be played. We will get this film, make the corrections and get ready for a big game against Kent State next week."
Carlton Johnson, Sr., DB
On his three interceptions and the performance of the defense...
"It feels really good to know that the preparation paid off. Our success on defense tonight goes back to one thing: coaching. We have a great coaching staff here and they put together a great game plan, we just had to execute it."
On ASU playing a third quarterback...
"Our coaches prepare us for anything and everything, even the unexpected. We watched his film just as much as we watched the other quarterbacks. It wasn't anything that we haven't seen yet. They prepare us so that we just have to go out there and play football."
On celebrating with loved ones after the game...
"My daughter was here. It was fun to see her smiling with my dad. Honestly, it was great to celebrate with the Red Wave. They always show out. They are a blessing. We have a great fan group. They are truly a blessing."
