Jose Lugo comes to Fresno State from the Arizona State Beach volleyball staff after volunteering for the Indoor program in the fall, which saw the Sun Devils return to the NCAA tournament for the fourth year in a row in 2015. He also had a successful coaching stop at Grand Canyon University, and a three-year stint at Dartmouth College.
At Arizona State, Lugo worked on opponent scouting and focused on passers and defense. The 2015 season was marked by the highest ranking in Sun Devil volleyball history, with the team reaching No. 5 in the nation.
While at Grand Canyon University, Lugo mentored the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Freshman of the Year while helping the program reach the 21-win plateau in its second Division I season. He also helmed the Beach program, where the team finished the season with a national ranking of 15, and mentored the No. 1 pair to a semifinal appearance in the AVCA Pairs Championship, where they garnered All-America status along the way.
In his first season at Dartmouth, the Big Green posted eight conference wins, the most in program history at the time, tying a previous mark. The 2012 recruiting class was named to the honorable mention list by PrepVolleyball.com, while landing a top 100 recruit. He was primarily responsible for training middles and guided two athletes to All-Ivy teams in that position.
Lugo is a pipeline coach with USA Volleyball, the national governing body of the sport, and has been a head coach, associate head coach and assistant coach working with various age groups of some of the most talented athletes from across the country.
Lugo is also a club coaching veteran, and adds 14 years of club experience to his nine years at the Division I level.
